Micronutrients are nutrients that are required in lesser amounts for the growth & development of the body and play a major role in the metabolic activities of the body e.g. vitamins and minerals. Micronutrients are required in less quantity in our bodies than macronutrients and this is how the differentiation between micromineral and macromineral is made. The macronutrients form an integral part of the metabolism whereas most micronutrients aid metabolism.

There are seven main micronutrients required by plants, some nutrients control the permeability of a cell membrane, and some other control the osmotic pressure, etc.

Boron (B), Zinc (Zn), Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo), and Chlorine (Cl) are some of the important micronutrients required by the plants, lack of any of these nutrients affects growth and development.

Boron (B)

Boron plays an important role in blossoming, ripening, cell division, and pollen germination. Boron is found in tourmaline and is a highly insoluble mineral. It is essential for the proper development and strengthening of the cell wall. A deficiency that results in reduced seed and grain production. Boron deficiencies generally occur during drought periods, whereas, excess supply or availability of boron is also harmful to the plant.

Zinc (Zn)

Zinc is an essential element that helps in photosynthesis, producing energy, and regulating growth. Its deficiency may cause slower maturity and reduction in the size of the leaf and these deficiencies often occur during the cold, wet spring season.

Manganese (Mn)

Manganese is crucial for photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism. Early leaf drop and delayed maturity are the symptoms of its deficiency. Manganese is ample in wet soils, whereas dry soil has limited manganese.

Iron (Fe)

Iron is essential for energy transmission, nitrogen fixation, and reduction. Iron, along with sulfur, acts as a catalyst in the formation of various reactions. Yellow colored leaves are the symptom of Iron deficiency.

Copper (Cu)

Copper is vital for proper functioning, photosynthesis, grain production, and the strengthening of a cell wall. Stunted growth and yellow-colored leaves are the symptoms of copper deficiency.

Molybdenum (Mo)

Molybdenum is required for pollen formation and nitrogen fixation. Reduced fruit or grain growth are the symptoms of Molybdenum deficiency. Sandy soils in humid region are the places where zinc deficiencies are found.

Chlorine (Cl)

Chlorine is the nutrient that helps in osmosis and ionic equilibrium. It also plays a key role in the process of photosynthesis. Decreased resistance and, reduced plant growth are the symptoms of chlorine deficiency.
