A 6 ohm resistance wire has been doubled via folding. Determine new resistance.

Resistance can be expressed as the ratio between the applied voltage to the current flowing through a circuit. The S.I. unit of resistance is Ohms (Ω).

Step 1: Read The Given Data

Initial resistance on wire, Ri = 6 Ω

Assume the initial length of wire as = Li

If final length of the wire is, L\( {{L_i} \over 2}\)

Assume the initial area = Ai

If the final area of the wire, A= 2Ai

Let the resistivity and final resistance of the wire be ρ and Rf respectively.

Step 2: Use of Formula

Resistance can be expressed as, \(R = \rho{{L} \over A}\)

Thus, \(\rho ={{RA} \over L}\)

Step 3: New Resistance Calculation

Since the resistivity of the wire remains the same in both, we can mention:

\(\rho = {{R_i A_i} \over L_i} = {{R_fA_f} \over L_f}\)

Upon value substitution, we can get,

\({{6A_i} \over Li} = {{4A_iR_f} \over L_i}\)

⇒ R= 1.5 \(\Omega\)

Thus, the new resistance is 1.5 \(\Omega\).
