Energy flow is the movement of energy through living organisms in a given environment. All living organisms can be classified as producers or consumers, and those producers and consumers can then be classified as part of a food chain. Each trophic level in the food chain is referred to as a trophic level. Energy Flow is based on the two laws of thermodynamics.

Enegy flow in ecosystem is the amount of energy that passes through a food chain. Energy flow is measured In Joules or calories, the energy input, or energy that enters the environment. As a result, the energy flow is sometimes referred to as calorific flow.

Important Elements of Ecosystem

Important elements of ecosystem are:

  • The Energy Flow is majorly responsible for allowing organisms to survive.
  • The sun is the main source of energy for living organisms.
  • Plants convert the radiation absorbed from the sun into energy via photosynthesis. This radiation, (we receive less than 50% of the sun’s effective radiation) which can be used by plants is called Effective Radiation, also termed as Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR).

Ecological Pyramid is a graphical representation of energy flowing through each trophic level of a food chain across a defined portion of the natural environment. Any energy lost at one trophic level is transferred to the next. The energy pyramid, also known as the trophic pyramid or ecological pyramid, is a tool for calculating how much energy is transferred from one creature to the next in the food chain.

Primary producers utilise solar energy to produce organic material through photosynthesis at the first trophic level. Plants are used as food by herbivores at the second trophic level, which provides them with energy. The metabolic operations of these creatures, such as breathing, digesting food, supporting tissue growth, maintaining blood circulation, and maintaining body temperature, consume a considerable portion of this energy.
