Trees Summary

The poem Trees includes seven stanzas with twenty-eight lines in total. Emily Dickinson uses various poetic devices to explain the trees on a summer day, for example- personifications, similes, and imagery. 

  • The poem begins with the description of the swaying tree with the wind.
  • In the second stanza, the poet describes how the musical sound of an unseen instrument is mesmerizing her.
  • In this third stanza, Emily Dickinson goes back to describing how the sun is playing hide and seek in the cloud and only shows his face whenever he feels like it.
  • The next two stanzas describe the lives on the earth and the wealth they have.
  • She concluded the poem by stating even after all these descriptions, she is unable to describe the beauty of such summer days.
