Deep Water Summary

Deep Water is an autobiographical piece written by William Douglas. Here, we get to know about the writer’s fear of water and how he was able to overcome that fear in his own life. It is a first-person narrative. Two basic incidents led the writer to fear the deep water.

  • Once in his childhood, when the author was three or four years old and was visiting California, he was knocked down by a high wave at the sea beach. While his father laughed knowing that won’t hurt, the author was frightened enough.
  • Next in the chapter Deep Water, the author described another incident from his young age, which made his fear of water even worse. One day, at Y.M.C.A., when he was waiting for the other students to join, a boy playfully pushed him into the pool water. While trying to save himself from drowning, Douglas lost his consciousness. In this part, the author has perfectly described the feeling of drowning and the struggle he had to face to save himself from the situation. When he finally regained consciousness, he was laying by the pool site and vomiting.
  • These two incidents have somehow made Douglas afraid of deep water. He was not even able to enjoy the fun other people had in the lakes.
  • Though the author, William Douglas had tried to overcome this fear of water in many ways, he could not, until the day in October when he found a swimming coach for himself. With the help of that coach, once Douglas learned all the techniques of swimming, he was able to gain the courage and confidence to overcome this fear of water.
  • At the end of Deep Water, the author William Douglas realized fear is nothing but a mental barrier to living life to the fullest.
