An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum Summary

The poem An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum was written by the English Essayistv and famous poet Stephen Spender. Just like the poet’s most works, this poem also deals with the theme of social injustices and inequalities. The poem was written in the free verse format.

• In the poem- An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum, the poet started by describing the faces and expressions of the students present in the classroom. From the faces of the children, it is clear that they belong to poor families in the slum area.
• In the next paragraph, the poet goes on to describe the classroom. The school does not have proper study materials and equipment for practical knowledge.
• According to the poet, the future of these students can not be fulfilled with the brightness of proper education this way.
• In the third paragraph of the poem, the poet expresses his concerns about the future of these students. According to him, in the future, these students might become thieves, or criminals just to survive.
• In the last paragraph of the poem, the poet tried to grab all our attention towards these children and pleads to accept them into the society and to take them out of that slum area so that they get the same opportunities as the other children without the boundary of casts and social rankings.
• The poem ends with a powerful line, it says- those people who make history are the ones who shine like the sun.
