Memories of Childhood Summary
In this lesson, ‘Memories of Childhood’, being a Native American woman, Zitkala-Sa represented how the women's oppression have a huge impact on her childhood. On the other hand, Bama, the Tamil Dalit writer talks about the theme of untouchability in the Indian Caste system.
- The lesson begins with an Indo-American girl Simmons, who described her first day at school and how she had faced racial discrimination there.
- Simmons made a few mistakes without understanding the rules and was made fun of by the other students in her school. Her classmates had forced her to cut her hair shot as per the ‘American culture’, which crushed Simmon’s spirit.
- The second part is about Bama, the Tamil Dalit writer, who used to wonder about every small thing on her way back home from school.
- One day she was made realized by her brother that they belong to the lower caste family, and the only way to earn respect is by making an honorable place in the society. Hence, Bama tried hard to come first in every exam.
