What is CLAT 2027?

CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. It is a centralized national-level entrance exam conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLU Consortium) every year. CLAT is used for admissions to 5-year integrated LLB programmes (UG) and LLM programmes (PG) at National Law Universities across India. CLAT 2027 will be held on December 6, 2026, and leads to admission for the 2027–28 academic session at 26 participating NLUs and IIULER Goa.

One feature that sets CLAT apart from other national entrance exams is that it is entirely passage-based. Every question — across all five sections — is drawn from a reading passage provided in the question paper. You do not need to memorise facts or legal definitions; you must read the given passage and answer questions using the information provided. This tests reading comprehension, reasoning ability, and language skills rather than rote learning.

CLAT 2027 Exam Pattern

The CLAT 2027 exam pattern follows the same structure as previous years, with no changes confirmed by the Consortium. Both the UG and PG papers consist of 120 MCQs to be answered in 2 hours, conducted in offline (pen-and-paper) mode. All questions are drawn from reading passages — there are no standalone direct-knowledge questions anywhere in the paper.

CLAT 2027 Syllabus

The CLAT 2027 syllabus has no changes from previous years, as confirmed by the Consortium. Since CLAT is passage-based, the syllabus is best understood as the type of reading material and reasoning tasks in each section, not a list of topics to memorise. Below is a section-wise breakdown of what each part of the CLAT 2027 syllabus covers.

English Language

The English section tests reading comprehension through literary and non-fiction passages of 450–600 words each. You must identify the main idea, understand vocabulary in context, draw inferences, and identify grammatically correct usage — all based only on what the passage says.

  • Reading comprehension: main idea, tone, inference, and purpose of the passage
  • Vocabulary in context: meaning of words and phrases as used in the passage
  • Grammar and usage: identifying correct and incorrect usage from passage text
  • Summarising and paraphrasing: capturing the passage’s key argument or theme

Current Affairs including General Knowledge

This is one of the two highest-weighted sections (25%). It tests awareness of national and international events from the past 12 months, presented through passages. Candidates who read newspapers regularly through their preparation have a strong advantage here.

  • National and international news from October 2025 to December 2026
  • Science and technology developments
  • History, geography, economics, and Indian polity (static GK)
  • Art, culture, literature, and sports events
  • International organisations, treaties, summits, and awards
  • Supreme Court judgments and new laws passed by Parliament

Legal Reasoning

The Legal Reasoning section (25%) tests your ability to read a passage containing legal rules or principles and apply those rules to factual situations given in the questions. No prior law knowledge is needed — the passage provides all the rules you need.

  • Applying legal principles stated in the passage to given factual situations
  • Understanding the structure of law-making and the legal system
  • Reading legal materials: contracts, torts, criminal scenarios, constitutional issues
  • Identifying legal issues, applying given rules, and reaching conclusions
  • Distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant facts in a legal context

Logical Reasoning

The Logical Reasoning section tests critical analysis and reasoning through argument-based passages. CLAT logical reasoning is primarily critical reasoning — careful reading and analysis matter more than shortcut techniques.

  • Identifying premises, conclusions, and assumptions in arguments
  • Drawing valid inferences from given information
  • Evaluating the strength or weakness of arguments
  • Spotting flaws in reasoning or logical gaps
  • Analogies, logical sequences, and syllogisms within passage contexts

Quantitative Techniques

This is the smallest section (10%) and tests basic arithmetic and data interpretation at the Class 10 level through passages that include graphs, tables, or numerical data. It does not require advanced mathematics.

  • Ratio and proportion, percentages, profit and loss
  • Simple and compound interest
  • Statistics: mean, median, mode, range
  • Data interpretation: bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, data tables
  • Basic number system and arithmetic operations

CLAT 2027 Marks vs Rank

The Consortium does not officially publish a marks-vs-rank table, but based on previous year data and the total number of candidates appearing, you can estimate your expected rank range. The correlation shifts each year depending on the paper’s difficulty and total candidate count.

In CLAT 2026, more than 88,000 candidates appeared. Competition for top NLU seats is intense. To secure a seat at NLSIU Bengaluru (General category), you typically need to rank within the top 100, which usually requires a score of 95 or above. For NALSAR Hyderabad (Round 1 closing rank 148), a score of around 90–92 is generally needed. The table below shows expected rank ranges for CLAT 2027 based on CLAT 2026 trends.

Marks Range (out of 120) Expected CLAT 2027 Rank CLAT 2026 Reference Rank
95 and above Top 50 Top 50
90–94 51–600 1–585
85–89 601–2,000 586–1,955
80–84 2,001–4,000 ~2,000–4,000
75–79 4,001–7,500 ~4,000–7,500
70–74 7,501–12,000 ~7,500–12,000
65–69 12,001–20,000 ~12,000–20,000
Below 65 20,001 and above 20,001 and above

The marks-vs-rank data above is based on CLAT 2026 trends and is indicative only. Actual CLAT 2027 ranks depend on the paper’s difficulty and the total number of candidates appearing. A harder paper means lower average scores, and the same rank can be achieved with fewer marks compared to an easier year.

Even a score of 80–84 can still secure admission at several NLUs in later counselling rounds if you fill in enough preferences. The cutoff at each NLU shifts round-by-round as some allotted candidates withdraw or move to better institutes.

RGNUL Patiala Punjab ~1,500 ~3,500 ~6,000
CNLU Patna Bihar ~1,800 ~4,000 ~6,500

CLAT 2026 Round 1 closing ranks for NLSIU, NALSAR, WBNUJS, and NLU Jodhpur are based on published data. Figures for other NLUs are approximate estimates based on historical trends. Official CLAT 2027 cutoffs will be released by the Consortium during counselling in January 2027.

Round 1 closing ranks are typically the most competitive. In later rounds, some candidates who got top NLUs withdraw, opening seats for candidates with lower ranks. In CLAT 2026, the fifth and final counselling round resulted in 492 fresh allotments across all participating institutions. So always fill in as many NLU preferences as possible during counselling to maximise your chances in later rounds.

CLAT 2027 Counselling Process

CLAT 2027 counselling will be conducted entirely online by the Consortium after results are declared in December 2026. Based on CLAT 2026, counselling registration is expected to open in late December 2026, with Round 1 seat allotment likely around January 7, 2027. Multiple rounds will follow, with the final round expected around May 2027.

Step-by-Step CLAT 2027 Counselling Process

  • Step 1 — Register for Counselling: After results, log in at the official Consortium portal and register for counselling by paying the registration fee. This step is mandatory — candidates who skip registration will not receive any seat allotment, regardless of their rank.
  • Step 2 — Fill NLU Preferences: UG candidates must fill at least 15 NLU preferences. PG candidates must fill at least 5 preferences. You should fill as many preferences as possible — the Consortium only allots from NLUs you have listed, and a longer list improves your chances across rounds.
  • Step 3 — Round 1 Seat Allotment: The Consortium releases the first allotment list based on your rank and the NLU preferences you filled. You are allotted the best available NLU matching your rank and category.
  • Step 4 — Choose Freeze, Float, or Exit: After receiving your Round 1 allotment, you must choose one of three options:
    • Freeze: Accept the allotted NLU, withdraw from further rounds, and pay the admission fee to confirm your seat.
    • Float: Accept the current seat but remain in the pool for better preferences in the next round. If a better NLU becomes available, you move there. If not, your current seat is held.
    • Exit: Withdraw completely from the counselling process. This is irreversible.
  • Step 5 — Subsequent Rounds: Multiple rounds are held to fill vacant seats. In CLAT 2026, five counselling rounds were conducted, with the last round completing in May 2026.
  • Step 6 — Report to the Allotted NLU: Once you confirm a seat (by choosing Freeze), you must report to the NLU within the given deadline with all original documents for verification and fee payment.

CLAT 2027 counselling dates, registration fee, and round-by-round schedule will be published on consortiumofnlus.ac.in after results in December 2026. Keep checking the portal from mid-December 2026 onwards.

CLAT 2027 Preparation Tips

With the exam on December 6, 2026, you have about 7–8 weeks from today to finalise your preparation. The focus now should be on consolidation, timed practice, and fixing weak areas — not starting new topics from scratch. Here is a section-wise strategy for the final phase.

English Language

  • Practise passage-based reading daily: Read 2–3 editorials or opinion pieces from quality newspapers every day. Aim to finish each passage in under 8 minutes and identify the main idea, tone, and key inferences. This directly mirrors what the exam asks you to do.
  • Work on vocabulary in context: CLAT does not test vocabulary in isolation — it tests your ability to guess the meaning of a word or phrase from the surrounding passage. Practise this with real passages rather than word lists.
  • Track accuracy over speed: A wrong answer in CLAT costs you 1.25 effective marks (1 mark lost + 0.25 deducted). Read carefully rather than rushing through passages.

Current Affairs including General Knowledge

  • Revise 12 months of news (October 2025 – October 2026): Focus on national and international events in law, governance, science, and international affairs. CLAT GK passages frequently feature Supreme Court judgments, constitutional developments, and major government policies — these are high-frequency topics.
  • Use monthly current affairs compilations: Going through well-organised monthly summaries is far more efficient than searching through news archives. Prioritise law-related GK topics over general sports or entertainment news.
  • Do not ignore static GK: Basic Indian polity (Constitution, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles), Indian history, and geography regularly appear in GK passages alongside current news content.

Legal Reasoning

  • Apply only what the passage gives you: The most common mistake is using prior legal knowledge instead of the rule stated in the passage. Train yourself to read the rule in the passage and apply it exactly as given — no more, no less.
  • Build basic legal familiarity as a reading aid: You don’t need law school knowledge, but some familiarity with concepts like tort liability, consideration in contracts, mens rea, and constitutional rights helps you absorb passage rules faster during the exam.
  • Practise full passage sets: Legal reasoning passages are 450–500 words with 4–6 questions each. Complete these as unbroken sets, not individual questions, to mirror actual exam conditions.

Logical Reasoning

  • Focus on critical reasoning, not pattern tricks: CLAT logical reasoning is almost entirely critical reasoning — evaluating the strength of arguments, identifying assumptions, and drawing valid inferences. Avoid shortcut techniques designed for traditional logical puzzles, as they don’t apply here.
  • Read argument passages slowly: Logical reasoning passages in CLAT are short (300–400 words) but dense. Take time to understand what claim is being made before attempting the questions.

Quantitative Techniques

  • A brief Class 10 maths revision is enough: The Quantitative section only needs percentages, ratios, basic statistics (mean, median, mode), and data interpretation. Most candidates can complete a useful revision in 3–4 hours.
  • Prioritise data interpretation: Pie charts, bar graphs, and data tables appear most often. The challenge is not the arithmetic but reading the right data quickly from the visual.
  • Don’t over-invest time here: With only 10% weight (~12 questions), spend proportionally more preparation time on Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs, which each carry 25%.

Mock Tests and General Strategy

  • Take at least 2–3 full-length mock tests each week from now until the exam. Review every wrong answer thoroughly — understanding why you got it wrong matters more than doing more tests without review.
  • Time management is critical. You have 2 hours for 120 questions — about 1 minute per question on average. In practice, Quantitative questions can be done faster, giving you more time for longer Legal and GK passages. Develop your own section-order approach through mocks.
  • Buy official previous-year CLAT question papers from the Consortium portal (Rs. 500) — these are the most authentic practice material available and worth the investment at this stage of preparation.
