Aunt Jeniffer’s Tigers Summary
This poem is written by the American poet and essayist Adrienne Rich. In her own life, the poet had gone through the family's domination, especially by the men in her family. It is a small poem of 12 lines divided into three stanzas, following the AABB rhyme pattern.
- In this poetry, the central character- Aunt Jennifer is dominated by her husband in the real life.
- Yet she always expresses her innermost desires to be free from this domination through her form of art. Hence, she had made a tiger on the panel which is her way of expressing her fearlessness.
- Whereas the men did not care about their wives and moved on with their chores, the wives are now tired of being dominated, so much that their fingers are shaky now.
- There seems to be no way to get out of this misery for Aunt Jeniffer until death comes. But her art will be there as the symbol of her free will.
