What is XAT 2027?
XAT stands for Xavier Aptitude Test. XLRI - Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, has been conducting this exam since 1955, making it one of the oldest and most respected MBA entrance exams in India. XLRI itself is consistently ranked among the top five business schools in the country.
- XAT 2027 is the qualifying exam for XLRI’s PGDM programmes in Business Management (BM) and Human Resource Management (HRM).
- Over 150 other premier management institutes across India, including XIM University Bhubaneswar, IMT Ghaziabad, IMI Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, GIM Goa, TAPMI, and MICA, also use XAT scores for their admission processes.
- It is unique among MBA entrance exams because it includes a Decision Making section, which tests your ability to make analytical and ethical decisions in complex business scenarios.
- No other major MBA entrance exam in India- not CAT, SNAP, or NMAT- has this section, which makes XAT distinctly different and requires focused preparation beyond standard CAT study material.
More than 2.5 lakh candidates register for XAT every year. Seats at top XAT-accepting colleges are limited, making it a highly competitive exam. If your target is XLRI, XAT is the only route; XLRI does not accept CAT, GMAT, or any other entrance exam for its BM and HRM programmes.

XAT 2027 Exam Pattern
XAT 2027 is a 3-hour computer-based test split into two parts. Part 1 has 75 questions across three sections and carries 75 marks. Part 2 has 20 General Knowledge questions. GK does not count in the XAT percentile, but many colleges use GK performance during their selection process.
- Decision Making carries 21 questions for 21 marks in XAT 2027 question paper.
- Verbal and Logical Ability carries 26 questions in XAT question paper.
- 28 questions are carried by QADI section of XAT syllabus 2027.
- General Knowledge carries a total of 20 questions for 10 marks.
- Duration of Part 1 of XAT question paper is 165 minutes and for Part 2 is 15 minutes.
| Section | Part | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decision Making (DM) | Part 1 | 21 | 21 | 165 minutes |
| Verbal and Logical Ability (VLA) | Part 1 | 26 | 26 | |
| Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QADI) | Part 1 | 28 | 28 | |
| General Knowledge (GK) | Part 2 | 20 | 10 (not in percentile) | 15 minutes |
| Total | 95 | 75 (for percentile) | 180 minutes |
XAT 2027 Marking Scheme
XAT 2027 has positive and negative marking in Part 1. You should plan your attempt strategy carefully around these rules.
- Correct Answer (Part 1): +1 mark
- Wrong Answer (Part 1): –0.25 marks
- Unattempted Questions (Part 1): –0.05 marks for each unattempted question beyond 8. The first 8 unattempted questions carry no penalty.
- General Knowledge (Part 2): No negative marking. GK scores are reported on the scorecard but are not counted in the XAT percentile.
The unattempted-questions penalty is unique to XAT. If you leave more than 8 questions blank in Part 1, each additional blank costs 0.05 marks. Aim to attempt at least 67 of the 75 Part 1 questions to avoid this penalty.

XAT 2027 Syllabus
XLRI has not released the complete XAT 2027 syllabus on the official website. However, XAT official website only mentions important topics for each XAT section as discussed below.
XAT 2027 Syllabus for Decision Making (DM)
- Analytical Reasoning: Logical decision-making in scenarios with multiple competing conditions
- Situational Judgment: Business and managerial situations requiring ethical and practical decisions
- Conditions and Grouping: Problems based on complex constraints and arrangements
- Case-Based Questions: Short business or social cases followed by 2–3 linked questions
- Data Arrangement: Arranging facts to arrive at the best course of action
Decision Making is the hardest section for most first-time XAT candidates. You need at least 10–12 weeks of consistent practice. Focus on learning how to eliminate wrong choices using ethical reasoning rather than calculation.
XAT 2027 Syllabus for Verbal and Logical Ability (VLA)
- Reading Comprehension: 2–3 passages with 3–5 questions each; topics are often abstract, philosophical, or literary
- Para Jumbles: Rearranging sentences into a coherent paragraph
- Sentence Completion and Correction
- Critical Reasoning: Assumptions, inferences, strengthening or weakening arguments
- Vocabulary and Analogies
- Poem-Based Comprehension: XAT sometimes includes a poetry passage — a unique feature not found in other MBA entrance exams
XAT’s VLA passages are deliberately abstract and literary, quite different from the business-themed passages common in CAT. Reading quality English publications — especially long-form essays and opinion pieces — helps significantly with this section.
XAT Syllabus for Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QADI)
- Arithmetic: Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time-speed-distance, work and time, ratio and proportion
- Algebra: Equations, functions, progressions, inequalities
- Geometry and Mensuration: Triangles, circles, coordinate geometry, area and volume
- Number System: Factors, HCF-LCM, divisibility, remainders
- Modern Mathematics: Permutations and combinations, probability, set theory
- Data Interpretation: Tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, mixed DI sets
- Data Sufficiency
QADI overlaps significantly with CAT’s Quantitative Ability section. If you are preparing for CAT 2026, your QADI foundation is largely in place. XAT QADI is known for multi-step Geometry, Number Theory, and Data Sufficiency problems. Strengthen these areas specifically for XAT.
XAT Syllabus for General Knowledge (GK)
- Current Affairs: National and international events from the past 12 months
- Business and Economy: Corporate news, economic policy, Union Budget, RBI updates
- Sports: Major tournaments, records, and awards
- Science and Technology: Major discoveries, space missions, and tech developments
- Static GK: Indian geography, history, polity, and culture
- Awards and Recognitions: Nobel Prizes, Booker Prize, Padma Awards, etc.
GK is not counted in your XAT percentile, but several top colleges — including XIM Bhubaneswar — factor in GK performance during their shortlisting and interview rounds. Do not skip GK preparation.

XAT 2027 Preparation Tips
To crack the XAT 2027 exam, you must have a proper strategy and study plan to follow. You can follow the preparation tips discussed below to prepare for XAT 2027.
- Practise Decision Making PYQs: Solve 3–5 caselets daily and analyse errors related to stakeholder interests, ethics, assumptions, and practicality.
- Prepare all VALR question types: Practise RC, critical reasoning, grammar, poems, and abstract passages instead of focusing only on reading comprehension.
- Prioritise Quant topics using PYQs: Track topic-wise accuracy in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and DI to identify weak areas rather than relying solely on predicted weightage.
- Improve question selection: Use timed practice to identify easy questions first and avoid spending excessive time on difficult Quant and DI sets.
- Analyse every mock test: Record section-wise scores, accuracy, time spent, incorrect answers, and solvable questions left unattempted. Spend 60–90 minutes reviewing mistakes.
- Account for negative marking: Under the XAT 2026 rules, incorrect answers attract a 0.25-mark penalty, while excessive unattempted questions in Part 1 can also incur penalties. Verify the XAT 2027 marking scheme before applying this strategy.
- Revise GK consistently: Dedicate 15–20 minutes daily to current affairs and static GK, and revise monthly notes rather than collecting too many resources.
- Use student discussions selectively: Refer to Reddit and YouTube for practical insights on DM reasoning, mock analysis, and question selection, but validate strategies against official previous-year papers.
- Follow a phased study plan: Focus on concepts and PYQs in October–November, full-length mocks and analysis in December, and targeted revision during the final week.
XAT 2027 Study Plan
XAT 2027 is scheduled for January 3, 2027, from 2 PM to 5 PM. Candidates should focus on concept-building, previous-year questions, and mock-test analysis in the remaining preparation period.
| Phase | Timeline | Preparation Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Concept Building | October 16–31, 2026 | Strengthen Quant basics, practise daily DM caselets, and cover RC, critical reasoning and grammar. Attempt one diagnostic mock to identify weak areas. |
| Phase 2: PYQ Practice | November 1–15, 2026 | Solve section-wise previous-year questions, track topic-wise accuracy, and review incorrect answers. Start regular GK revision. |
| Phase 3: Timed Practice | November 16–30, 2026 | Take sectional tests, practise question selection and improve time management. Revisit difficult DM caselets and weak Quant topics. |
| Phase 4: Mock Tests | December 1–20, 2026 | Attempt 1–2 full-length mocks per week. Analyse section-wise scores, accuracy, time spent and avoidable errors after every test. |
| Phase 5: Final Revision | December 21, 2026–January 2, 2027 | Revise formulas, GK notes and previously incorrect questions. Practise selected PYQs, avoid major new topics and confirm exam-day instructions. |
Preparation tip: Allocate more practice time to Decision Making and VALR if your diagnostic mock reveals weaknesses in these sections.

XLRI Programmes Open to XAT 2027 Candidates
XLRI Jamshedpur offers the following programmes for which XAT 2027 is the qualifying exam:
- PGDM – Business Management (BM): A 2-year flagship general management programme. One of the most prestigious MBA-equivalent degrees in India, with strong placements in consulting, finance, and marketing.
- PGDM – Human Resource Management (HRM): A 2-year specialised programme. XLRI is consistently ranked among the top HR schools in Asia.
- Global MBA (GMP): A 15-month executive programme for working professionals with 5+ years of experience. XAT is one of the qualifying exams for GMP.
XLRI is the only institute that exclusively uses XAT and does not accept CAT or GMAT for its PGDM-BM and PGDM-HRM programmes. Every other college on the list also accepts CAT and/or GMAT alongside XAT.
XAT 2027 Selection Process
Unlike IIM admissions, where a Common Admission Process runs centralised shortlisting, XAT selection is completely decentralised. Each college shortlists and selects candidates independently after XAT 2027 results come out. There is no XAT counselling authority or common seat allotment system.
XLRI Selection Process for XAT 2027
XLRI’s admission process for BM and HRM programmes has three stages after the XAT result:
- XAT Score Shortlisting: XLRI screens candidates based on section-wise percentile (DM, VLA, and QADI separately) and overall XAT percentile. Both thresholds must be cleared simultaneously.
- WAT (Written Ability Test): Shortlisted candidates write an essay. You get a topic related to business, ethics, or society and need to write a focused, structured piece in about 20–30 minutes.
- Personal Interview (PI): XLRI’s PI is rigorous. The panel assesses academic background, work experience, current affairs awareness, clarity of career goals, and alignment with XLRI’s Jesuit values around ethics and social responsibility.
XLRI also weighs Class 10, Class 12, and graduation GPA, the quality and relevance of work experience, and gender diversity as part of the final composite score for admission offers.
Selection Process at Other XAT-Accepting Colleges
Most other XAT-accepting colleges follow a 3-stage process after shortlisting:
- Stage 1 – XAT Percentile Cutoff: Each college sets its own percentile threshold. Some also weigh academic record and work experience at this stage.
- Stage 2 – GD or WAT: Group Discussion or Written Ability Test. Some colleges skip GD and go directly to PI.
- Stage 3 – Personal Interview: Online or in-person interview assessing domain knowledge, goals, and personality.
Note that SPJIMR’s selection process gives a high weight to work experience and social contribution. MICA additionally requires a MICAT score for shortlisting, and XAT is one of the qualifying exams for MICAT. Always check each college’s official website for its specific selection criteria.
