CAT 2019 Exam Day Guidelines- Check Do's and Don'ts

IIM Kozhikode released Exam Day Guidelines for CAT 2019 aspirants. The exam is scheduled for November 24, 2019 (Sunday). Candidates must reach the exam center with their printed CAT Admit Card and an original ID proof at least  30 minutes prior to the gate closure time. 

  • CAT 2019 will be conducted in two sessions: Forenoon ( 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM; Reporting Time: 7:30 AM) and Afternoon (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM; Reporting Time: 1:00 PM).
  • For PwD candidates, the duration of the exam is 4 hours (240 minutes).
  • Candidates can use the Google Map Link Feature on the electronic version of their Admit Card for locating their test center. 

With around 10 days to the exam, and many to-do’s on plate, a majority of candidates forget to pay attention on the requirements of the exam day and the process. This article takes you through the exam day guidelines for CAT 2019 and helps you understand the exam day workflow.

CAT Exam Day Guidelines

Admit Card

The first and foremost thing a candidate needs to do is the downloading of admit card from the official website. Post downloading, the candidate needs to check all particulars including:

  • Name 
  • Registration Number 
  • Exam Date 
  • Time / Session 
  • PwD status 
  • Test city 
  • Test Center address 
  • Reference Number

Document Verification & Biometric Registration

After entering the test center and completion of frisking process (security check), a candidate needs to get his/her documents verified. Candidate’s admit card (affixed with photograph), original ID proof, will be checked on desk.

Post document verification, candidates will be asked to proceed with biometric registration.

  • Candidate’s left thumb impression and photograph will be captured.
  • Candidates will be required to sign the Attendance Sheet.

A list of the do's and don’ts for the exam day is tabulated below:

Print the Admit Card on an A4 size paper with legibly printed Candidate’s photograph and signature.Exam will be cancelled if a candidate is found to appear for the test multiple times
Carry and verify Original ID proofs as specified in the admit card before leaving for the test center.Usage of Mobile phones, Electronic Gadgets, Watches, Calculators, own Stationery items, Wallets, and/or Goggles is prohibited.
Affix the photograph (same as used in the application process) in the space provided in the admit card before handing it over for verification at the Test Center.Do not use the keyboard at any point of time; this will lock your computer system
Report at the test premises before gate closure timing.Don’t request for a bio-break while inside the Exam Lab unless it is a Medical emergency and will not be entertained.
Deposition of all personal belongings such as mobile phone, bag, wallets, jackets, jewellery, watch, electronic gadgets, stationary items, etc. at the Test Centre Entrance Gate is necessary.Do not wear any jewelry (or any item(s) containing metal), jackets and footwear inside the Exam Lab.
Reference Number printed on the Admit Card helps in checking the location of Exam Lab from the List displayed on the Notice Board.Wastage of writing pad pages is not allowed as sheets are distributed only once.
At the Console, use the Mouse to select the right Option as answer for an MCQ and to use the on-screen Keyboard to answer a non-MCQ. 
Mandatorily provide your attendance in the Form with signature when asked for in the Exam Lab. 
After the Exam, handover the duly signed Admit Card to the Invigilator present in the Exam Lab.

Exam Format

  • The medium of exam is English for all candidates.
  • Exam would comprise of three sections:
    • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC).
    • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
    • Quantitative Ability (QA)
  • Question would be in MCQ and Non-MCQ format.
  • For all MCQ questions, -1 would be deducted as penalty. No negative marking will be there for Non-MCQ questions.
  • Virtual keyboard shall be used for Non-MCQ questions with the help of mouse.
  • Each section has to be completed in 60 minutes, which means 180 minutes in total.
  • Timer displayed at the top right hand corner will show the remaining time left for each section. On completion of 60 minutes, the answers will automatically get locked and submitted.
  • While answering questions, candidates can use the following information:
    • Save & Next (save responses and move to next question)
    • Clear Response (clears selected response)
    • Mark for Review & Next (mark the question for review at later stage of exam)
  • On the right hand side, candidate can see the status of attempted questions.
    • Green: answered and not marked for review
    • Red: neither answered nor marked for review
    • Grey: questions not visited
    • Violet: questions marked for review without answers
    • Violet with green tick: questions marked for review with answers.
  • Candidates will also be able to see the Question Paper, Profile, Instructions, and Online Calculator on their screens.
  • Once the paper is complete, candidates are required to fill in an online feedback form and have to submit writing pads and pen to the invigilator.

Guidelines for Persons with Disability (PwD) Candidates

  • PwD candidates are given an additional 20 minutes (4 hours in total) to complete the examination. 
  • Separate rooms are assigned either on the ground floor or floors accessible by elevators. 
  • Special coordinators are provided for PwD candidates. 
  • PwD candidates with Scribe are required to carry the Scribe Affidavit duly signed by the candidate and the scribe.

  • For candidates specifying the requirement of a wheelchair (as indicated in their admit cards), the same will be provided. 
  • ‘Zoom’ feature will be enabled on candidate’s test console (for visually impaired candidates) as per the requirement mentioned in the admit card.

It is essential to appear for Common Admission Test (CAT) 2019 in order to get admission to MBA 2020 in 20 IIMs and other top MBA colleges in India. The exam is therefore referred to as IIM CAT and is conducted by IIMs on an annual basis. Thus, getting nervous before examination is but obvious, out of which ignorance to ‘The’ day formalities is possible. Therefore, it is important to keep a check on the last moment preparation to appear for a great, hassle-free examination.
