MBBS seats in India have crossed the 1.29 lakh mark for NEET UG 2026. The latest count stands at approximately 1,29,602 seats across 823 medical colleges, according to current seat-tracking data.

• Government colleges, including AIIMS and other central institutions, offer approximately 63,159 seats. Private and deemed universities add another 66,443 seats (approximate).
• The national total has grown from roughly 1,15,000 seats two years ago to nearly 1,29,602 seats now, with close to 11,501 new MBBS seats added in this cycle alone.
• Demand still outpaces supply by a wide margin. Over 23 lakh students appeared for NEET UG 2025, competing for roughly 1.3 lakh seats nationwide.
• Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu together account for more than a quarter of all MBBS seats in the country.
• The AIIMS network has expanded to 22 institutes, up from just 7 a decade ago, adding fresh seats every year.

Government vs Private MBBS Seats in India 2026

• Private and deemed colleges now offer slightly more seats (66,443) than government colleges (63,159), so you cannot rely on government colleges alone while planning your options.
• There are fewer private colleges (373) than government ones (450), which means private colleges run larger batch sizes on average.
• AIIMS contributes only 2,257 seats out of the national total, so do not count on AIIMS alone even though it is the most sought-after brand.
• ESIC and the Armed Forces Medical College add 500-plus seats combined, a smaller but useful central pool many aspirants overlook.

AIQ vs State Quota: How MBBS Seats Are Filled

• The All India Quota (AIQ) covers 15% of government seats. The MCC fills these centrally, and you can compete from any state regardless of domicile.
• The State Quota covers the remaining 85%. Your state's own counselling authority fills these, usually reserved for domicile candidates.
• Private and deemed seats are filled entirely through their own counselling, split further into Management Quota, NRI Quota, and Institutional Preference Quota, each with its own fee structure.
• If you want AIQ seats, you must register separately with the MCC even after qualifying NEET UG, so do not assume your NEET application alone covers this step.

NEET UG 2026 Counselling: What Happens After the Result

Every MBBS admission, government or private, requires a valid NEET UG score. Here is how the process typically flows once results are declared.

• Result and merit list: The NTA publishes the All India Merit List, and your rank decides which seats are realistically within reach.
• MCC registration for AIQ: Register separately on mcc.nic.in to compete for AIQ seats in government colleges, plus all AIIMS, JIPMER, and ESIC seats.
• State counselling registration: Register with your state authority at the same time for the 85% State Quota seats.
• Choice filling and locking: Enter your preferred college and course combinations in order of priority before the deadline.
• Seat allotment and reporting: If allotted, report to the college within the deadline with original documents and confirm your admission.
• Upgradation and mop-up rounds: Multiple rounds let you upgrade to a better seat if one opens up, with a final mop-up round for unfilled seats.
