If you are targeting IIMs, prioritise CAT 2026 preparation until November 29.

From November 30, shift your focus to XAT 2027 if XLRI or other XAT-accepting B-schools are on your list. The two exams are just 35 days apart and share most of their preparation.

  • CAT 2026 is on November 29 in three sessions; XAT 2027 is on January 3, 2027 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
  • XAT 2027 registration closes on December 6, 2026, so the form must be filled while CAT preparation is at its peak.
  • IIM shortlists need a CAT score, while XLRI shortlists on XAT; most other top B-schools accept both.
  • XAT adds Decision Making and General Knowledge, which need dedicated practice after CAT.

Which Exam Should You Prioritise?

Your target college list decides the priority, not the exam's reputation.

  • If you want IIMs, IITs or FMS: treat CAT as the main exam. These institutes shortlist on a CAT score, and XAT cannot replace it.
  • If XLRI is a priority: XLRI shortlists on XAT only, so XAT is mandatory regardless of your CAT score.
  • If you want a wide B-school list: write both, since many top non-IIM institutes accept either score and a second score gives a second chance.
  • If your CAT preparation is weak: do not abandon CAT now, but do not skip XAT registration either; the form takes little time and the deadline is December 6.

How to Split November and December

The safest plan is sequential: CAT first, XAT second, with only light XAT touch-points before November 29.

  • Till November 29: keep 90% or more of your time on VARC, DILR and QA sectional mocks under the 40-minute limit.
  • Before December 6: complete the XAT 2027 application form, choose test city and XLRI programmes, and pay the fee.
  • November 30 – December 20: shift to Decision Making sets and start a daily GK and current affairs habit.
  • December 20 – January 2: take full-length XAT mocks of 180 minutes with no sectional switching restriction, and revise errors; the XAT admit card is tentatively expected around December 20.

What Carries Over from CAT to XAT

  • Quant and data interpretation: arithmetic, algebra and DI skills transfer directly, though XAT sets can be calculation-heavy.
  • Reading comprehension and verbal logic: CAT VARC practice helps the Verbal and Logical Ability section.
  • What does not transfer: Decision Making (ethical and situational case sets) and GK (8 static and 12 current-affairs questions, as per the published pattern) need fresh practice.

Colleges Accepting CAT vs XAT Score

CAT is the gateway to all 22 IIMs, while XAT is the only exam through which XLRI shortlists candidates.

  • XAT-only institute: XLRI Jamshedpur accepts XAT scores alone for its BM and HRM programmes.
  • Both scores are accepted: several top non-IIM schools accept either exam, and XAT is reported to be accepted by 250+ institutes.
