MCI (Medical Council of India) in a major announcement has decided to mandate NEET for admission to MBBS courses abroad. National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) has already being made the centralized entrance exam for admission to MBBS and BDS courses offered by all the Government and Private medical institutions in the country.

The move is aimed at regulating the quality of students looking to pursue MBBS abroad.Since the introduction of NEET, various agencies and educational consultants have been promising cheap medical education in foreign countries. It also paves the way for MBBS aspirants to bypass NEET as no formal entrance test is conducted for admission to MBBS courses in several foreign universities. All the aspirants however have to appear for FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) organized by MCI to register as medical practitioners in India.

The performance of many of these students have deteriorated over couple of years. The major reason cited behind this is the effluence of “low quality” students in countries like China or Russia which see the bulk of medical applications from the country. As per official sources in the health ministry, almost 6000-7000 medical aspirants move to Russia and China every year for pursuing MBBS. However, only a fraction (10%-15%) are able to pass the medical licentiate examination conducted by MCI. Read Also MCI Debars NIOS students from NEET 2019, HRD Ministry reverts decision

Currently, all medical aspirants need to obtain 50 per cent in the final 10+2 examination from a recognized board in order to procure Eligibility Certificate from MCI in order pursue MBBS in other countries. The multiplicity of educational boards also lead to differential quality among students. Moreover, there is no strict regularization on the foreign medical universities or the kind of education offered by them.

New Rule for MBBS Aspirants Seeking Admission in Foreign Universities

As per the officials in MCI, using NEET as the basis of eligibility for issuing eligibility certificate to MBBS aspirants would address the ongoing crisis of quality. According to new proposed rule, candidates among top 50 percentile in NEET are only eligible to pursue MBBS in offshore institutes. “There are concerns about the quality of the students who can easily get a degree in medicine from abroad and the poor quality of education being imparted in the institutions they go to. By making NEET mandatory, we can at least address one of the main issues,” was commented by one of the health ministry officials.

Any medical aspirant would have to qualify NEET and rank among top 5 percentile to keep alive their dreams of pursuing MBBS abroad. There will no alternative route for candidates. Check Expected Cutoff for NEET 2019

Besides making NEET compulsory for students seeking admission to MBBS courses in foreign universities, there are also other efforts on the part of health ministry and MCI to improve the quality of doctors who have completed their medical education outside India. China is one of the major recipients of MBBS applications from Indian students. The health ministry has therefore approached the Ministry of Education, China to identify and prepare list of 45 “good” colleges in China.

Candidates seeking eligibility certificates from MCI will be also guided on these “recognized” medical colleges in China. These rollout of these new policies is still not sure but the recent announcements from MCI is a clear indication on their approach in allowing only deserved candidates to become professional medical practitioners.
