JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria include no upper age limit, Class 12 pass with Physics and Mathematics, and a maximum of 3 consecutive years (6 attempts) to appear for the exam.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) sets the JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria for admission to B.Tech, B.E., B.Arch and B.Planning programmes at NITs, IIITs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). Students planning to appear must check all conditions — academic qualification, subject requirements, year of passing and number of attempts — before filling the application form.

  • No upper age limit applies for JEE Main 2027 B.Tech and B.E. papers.
  • Students who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027, are eligible.
  • Physics and Mathematics are compulsory Class 12 subjects for B.Tech and B.E. eligibility.
  • Each student can attempt JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years (6 total attempts).
  • For NIT and IIIT admission, you need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or rank in the top 20 percentile of your board.

Age Limit for JEE Main 2027

There is no upper age limit for JEE Main 2027. NTA removed the age bar in 2017. Students of any age can appear as long as they meet the academic qualification and attempt limit criteria.

For B.Arch and B.Planning papers (Paper 2A and Paper 2B), the same no-upper-age-limit rule applies. Students targeting IIT admission through JEE Advanced must check IIT-specific age conditions separately — IITs apply their own age criteria independent of JEE Main eligibility rules.

Academic Qualification for JEE Main 2027

To be eligible for JEE Main 2027, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination in 2025 or 2026, or
  • Appearing in Class 12 or an equivalent examination in 2027.

Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are generally not eligible for JEE Main 2027, unless 2027 still falls within their 3-consecutive-year attempt window. For example, a student who first appeared in JEE Main in 2025 after passing Class 12 in 2024 can still appear in 2027 — their third consecutive year.

Recognised equivalent qualifications include the International Baccalaureate (IB), NIOS, state open board certificates and certificates from foreign boards recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Subjects Required in Class 12 for JEE Main 2027

Subject requirements vary by the paper you intend to attempt. The table lists compulsory Class 12 subjects for each JEE Main 2027 paper.

JEE Main Paper Programme Compulsory Class 12 Subjects
Paper 1 B.Tech / B.E. Physics, Mathematics + any one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or Technical Vocational subject
Paper 2A B.Arch Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (all three are compulsory)
Paper 2B B.Planning Mathematics compulsory; other subjects as per board requirement

You must have studied a minimum of 5 subjects in Class 12. The compulsory subjects listed above must be among these 5. Students who appeared in only 4 subjects in Class 12 are not eligible for JEE Main 2027.

Number of Attempts for JEE Main 2027

Each student can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years. Since NTA conducts two sessions each year — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April — the total number of individual attempts across the 3-year window is 6.

Year Session 1 (January) Session 2 (April) Cumulative Attempts
Year 1 Attempt 1 Attempt 2 2
Year 2 Attempt 3 Attempt 4 4
Year 3 Attempt 5 Attempt 6 6

The 3-year window begins from the year you first pass Class 12. Skipping a session does not pause the clock — calendar years count regardless of whether you appeared. You can skip individual sessions but the 3-year limit runs continuously without interruption.

Class 12 Percentage Requirement for JEE Main 2027

There is no minimum percentage in Class 12 to register and appear in JEE Main 2027. NTA allows any student with the required subjects and year of passing to sit the exam regardless of board marks.

However, for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs through JoSAA counselling, you must meet the following score criteria:

Category Class 12 Criterion for NIT/IIIT Admission
General / OBC-NCL / EWS 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 or top 20 percentile of respective board
SC / ST / PwD 65% aggregate marks in Class 12 or top 20 percentile of respective board

The top 20 percentile threshold is computed separately for each state board. Students from boards with moderate score distributions may find this threshold falls below 75%, making the percentile route a viable path to NIT/IIIT eligibility even without 75% marks.

Paper-wise Eligibility for JEE Main 2027

JEE Main 2027 has three distinct papers targeting different programmes. You can appear for more than one paper in the same session if you meet the eligibility conditions for each.

Paper Programme Class 12 Subjects Age Limit Special Note
Paper 1 B.Tech / B.E. Physics + Maths + one science or technical subject None Qualifies you for JEE Advanced (IIT admission)
Paper 2A B.Arch Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (all three) None Includes a Drawing Test section
Paper 2B B.Planning Mathematics compulsory None Open to arts and humanities students with Maths

Students from arts or humanities streams who have Mathematics in Class 12 are eligible for Paper 2B (B.Planning). They are not eligible for Paper 1 (B.Tech) or Paper 2A (B.Arch) without both Physics and Mathematics in their Class 12 combination.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria FAQs

Ques. Is there an age limit for JEE Main 2027?

Ans. No. NTA removed the upper age limit for JEE Main from 2017 onwards. Students of any age can appear for JEE Main 2027 as long as they meet the Class 12 qualification and attempt criteria.

Ques. How many times can I attempt JEE Main 2027?

Ans. You can attempt JEE Main for 3 consecutive years, with 2 sessions per year — giving a maximum of 6 individual attempts. If 2027 falls within your 3-year window, you can sit both Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April).

Ques. What is the minimum percentage in Class 12 for JEE Main 2027?

Ans. There is no minimum percentage required to appear in JEE Main 2027. However, to qualify for NIT and IIIT admission through JoSAA counselling, you need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or rank in the top 20 percentile of your board.

Ques. Can a student who passed Class 12 in 2024 appear in JEE Main 2027?

Ans. Yes, if 2027 falls within their 3-consecutive-year window. A student who passed Class 12 in 2024 and first appeared in JEE Main in 2025 can still appear in 2026 and 2027. A student who appeared in 2023, 2024 and 2025 would have exhausted their 3-year window and is not eligible in 2027.

Ques. Can PCB students apply for JEE Main 2027?

Ans. PCB students (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) are eligible for JEE Main 2027 Paper 1 (B.Tech/B.E.) only if they also have Mathematics in Class 12. Students without Mathematics are not eligible for Paper 1 or Paper 2A (B.Arch).

Ques. What subjects are required for B.Arch admission through JEE Main 2027?

Ans. For B.Arch (Paper 2A), you must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — all three — in Class 12. This is stricter than the B.Tech requirement, where only Physics and Maths are compulsory alongside one other science or technical subject.
