JEE Main Mathematics Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution 2026
Mathematics is part of a 3-hour computer-based test. Both sections carry negative marking from 2026.
- Section A: 20 MCQs - +4 for correct, -1 for wrong
- Section B: 5 integer-type questions - +4 for correct, -1 for wrong from 2026
- Total Mathematics marks: 100 (25 questions at 4 marks each)
- Duration: 3 hours combined for all three subjects
- Mode: Computer-based test only
Note: Section B now carries -1 negative marking from 2026. No partial credit in either section.
JEE Main Sample Papers with Section B Pattern Change - Why 2024 and 2025 Papers Matter Most
Papers from 2024 and 2025 reflect the current difficulty balance most accurately. Before 2023, Section B had 10 numericals with choose-any-5 flexibility - that is gone now.
- Start with 2025 Session 1 - closest to the 2026 question type and time pressure
- 2024 papers introduced more application-based calculus numericals that now repeat in varied forms
- Use pre-2023 papers for chapter-level practice only, not as a full-paper score benchmark
JEE Main Mathematics Chapter Wise Weightage - High Scoring Topics to Focus in Sample Papers
Calculus and Coordinate Geometry together cover nearly half the paper. Score these two well and you are already ahead of most students.
| Chapter | Questions (Approx) | Difficulty | What to Watch For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integral Calculus | 3-4 | Moderate-Hard | Definite integrals, substitution, area under curves |
| Differential Calculus | 3-4 | Moderate-Hard | Limits, continuity, derivatives application |
| Coordinate Geometry | 4-5 | Moderate | Circles, parabola, ellipse, locus |
| Matrices and Determinants | 2-3 | Easy-Moderate | Inverse, adjoint, system of equations |
| Vectors and 3D Geometry | 2-3 | Moderate | Dot and cross product, planes, direction cosines |
| Probability and Statistics | 2-3 | Moderate | Bayes theorem, binomial distribution |
| Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations | 2 | Moderate | Modulus, argument, roots of unity |
| Sequences, Trigonometry and Reasoning | 3-4 | Easy-Moderate | AP and GP sums, inverse trig, tautology |
Do not skip Sequences, Trigonometry, and Mathematical Reasoning. These 3-4 questions are fast to solve and appear every session.
JEE Main Mathematics Sample Paper Video Solutions 2026 - Watch Before You Start Solving
Watching an expert walkthrough shows you the correct step order - not just the answer. For Mathematics, approach matters as much as the final result.
The session below covers JEE Main 2026 Session 1 with step-level reasoning for both MCQs and integer-type questions.

How to Use JEE Main Mathematics Sample Papers to Hit 99 Percentile
Solving papers without reviewing mistakes is why most students plateau at 90 percentile. The review step takes longer than the paper - that is the point.
- Solve Mathematics in exactly 60 minutes during every mock
- Sort wrong answers into three buckets: concept gap, silly error, or time rush
- Concept gaps go to chapter notes; silly errors go to a checklist you read before every mock
- Track Section B accuracy separately - 5 correct earns 20 marks and separates 90 from 99 percentile
- Target 18 correct in Section A plus 4 in Section B - that is 88 marks and 99 percentile territory
JEE Main Mathematics Section B Numerical Strategy - The Skill That Separates 90 and 99 Percentile
Section B carries 20 marks from 2026 with no optional questions. Getting all 5 right is the difference between 88 and 100.
- Work all 5 numericals in rough before entering any answer - stops premature commitment
- Rank by confidence; enter the most confident answers first to secure those marks
- Check units at every step - most errors come from unit mismatch midway
- Round off only in the final step; intermediate rounding kills exact integer answers
- Non-integer result means an error - Section B only accepts whole numbers from 0 to 9
JEE Main Mathematics 30 Day Preparation Plan Using Sample Papers
- Week 1 - Solve 2025 Session 1 untimed. Mark every question you could not start in 45 seconds and list the chapter. This is your gap map.
- Week 2 - Work only on the three weakest chapters from Week 1. Then attempt 2024 Session 1 under strict time conditions.
- Week 3 - Solve 2024 Session 2 and 2023 Session 1 back to back. Track Section B accuracy separately; target at least 4 out of 5.
- Week 4 - One full paper daily under exam timing. Stop new papers after Day 5. Spend the last 2 days on your error log and calculus formula sheet only.
FAQs on JEE Main Mathematics Sample Papers 2026
Ques. How many JEE Main Mathematics sample papers are enough to score above 99 percentile?
Ans. 15 to 20 full-length papers with a maintained error log. Students who solve more papers without reviewing mistakes plateau at 90 percentile.
Ques. Are JEE Main Mathematics PYQ questions repeated in new papers?
Ans. Direct repetition is rare, but the same concepts appear every session. PYQs show which topics NTA keeps returning to - and those are the ones to master first.
Ques. Which session paper should I start with for Mathematics practice?
Ans. Start with 2025 Session 1 - closest to the 2026 paper in difficulty. Then work back year by year.
Ques. Where can I download JEE Main Mathematics sample papers with solutions PDF for free?
Ans. Download numbered papers from the table at the top of this page. For PYQs with solutions, use the Collegedunia JEE Main question paper link in the year-wise table.
Ques. Is Section B Mathematics harder than Section A?
Ans. Concepts are often similar, but Section B requires an exact integer answer with no options to guide you. No choices, no estimation, and a -1 penalty from 2026 for a wrong entry.
