JEE Main Physics Exam Pattern and Marks Distribution 2026
Physics carries 100 marks in JEE Main Paper 1. Section A has 20 MCQs and Section B has 5 numericals, all compulsory from 2026.
- Section A: 20 MCQs - +4 for correct, -1 for wrong
- Section B: 5 numericals - +4 for correct, -1 for wrong, no optional set
- Total: 100 marks | 3-hour combined paper
Note: Section B numericals are all compulsory from 2026. There is no optional set anymore.
JEE Main Sample Papers with Compulsory Numericals - Why 2025 Papers Matter Most
Before 2025, Section B gave you 10 numericals and you picked any 5. From 2025, you get exactly 5 and must attempt all. Use 2024 and earlier papers for topic practice, but simulate full exams with 2025 papers.
- Start full-exam simulation with JEE Main 2025 Session 1 and Session 2
- Use 2022 to 2024 for chapter practice - solve all 5 numericals you find
JEE Main Physics Chapter Wise Weightage - High Scoring Topics to Focus in Sample Papers
Based on the last 10 years of JEE Main papers. NTA does not publish official chapter distribution, but the trend is consistent.
| Chapter | Questions | Difficulty | What to Watch For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Physics | 4-5 | Moderate | Photoelectric effect, radioactive decay |
| Electrostatics | 3-4 | Moderate | Capacitor combinations, Gauss's law |
| Current Electricity | 3-4 | Moderate-Hard | Kirchhoff's laws, Wheatstone bridge |
| Heat and Thermodynamics | 3 | Moderate | Carnot cycle, kinetic theory of gases |
| Optics - Ray and Wave | 3 | Moderate | Lens formula, Young's double slit |
| Magnetism and EMI | 2-3 | Hard | Faraday's law, AC circuits |
| Rotational Motion | 2 | Hard | Moment of inertia, rolling motion |
| Laws of Motion and Kinematics | 2 | Easy-Moderate | Projectile motion, relative velocity |
| Work, Energy and Power | 1-2 | Easy-Moderate | Energy conservation, work-energy theorem |
| Units, Dimensions and Semiconductors | 1-2 | Easy | Dimensional analysis, p-n junction |
Do not skip Units, Dimensions, and Semiconductors. Each carries 1 to 2 questions and most students clear them in under 2 minutes each.

How to Use JEE Main Physics Sample Papers to Hit 99 Percentile
Solving papers without reviewing mistakes is why most students plateau at 85 to 90 percentile.
- First paper - untimed: Mark every question you could not start in 30 seconds and note the chapter.
- Error log: For every wrong answer, write the chapter, the concept missed, and the correct approach - not just the correct option.
- Type A errors (wrong concept): revise the chapter. Type B errors (calculation slip): find the exact step that broke.
- After two untimed papers, move to full 60-minute Physics sections under strict timing.
- Target 80+ marks in every timed mock. Below 60 means one more untimed paper per week.
JEE Main Physics Section B Numerical Strategy - The Skill That Separates 90 and 99 Percentile
All 5 Section B numericals are compulsory from 2026. Leaving any blank means a lost 4 marks.
- Rough work all 5 first, then write final answers - this shows you which ones are safe to commit to.
- Check units at every step. Wrong units carried to the final answer is the most common JEE Physics numerical error.
- Round off only at the last step - rounding intermediates can shift your answer and cost 4 marks.
- Track Section B accuracy. Fewer than 3 correct consistently means Electrostatics or Thermodynamics needs dedicated revision.
JEE Main Physics 30 Day Preparation Plan Using Sample Papers
- Week 1 - Solve 2025 Session 1 Physics untimed. List every unattempted question by chapter. That list drives your revision this week.
- Week 2 - Revise the two weakest chapters, then solve 2025 Session 2 under 60-minute timing.
- Week 3 - Solve 2024 Session 1 and 2024 Session 2 on alternate days. Track how many numericals you finish inside 4 minutes each.
- Week 4 - One full Physics section daily under exam conditions. Stop new papers 2 days before the exam. Review your error log only.
FAQs on JEE Main Physics Sample Papers 2026
Ques. How many JEE Main Physics sample papers are enough to score above 99 percentile?
Ans. 15 to 20 full Physics sections, with an error log. Solving 40 papers without reviewing usually stalls students at 90 percentile.
Ques. Which year's JEE Main Physics papers should I start with for 2026 prep?
Ans. 2025 Session 1 and Session 2 first - they match the current pattern. Use 2022 to 2024 for chapter-specific practice after.
Ques. Are JEE Main Physics PYQ questions repeated in new papers?
Ans. The exact question rarely repeats, but the concept and calculation setup often repeat within 2 to 3 years. PYQs train you to recognise those setups under time pressure.
Ques. Where to download JEE Main Physics previous year papers with answer key for free?
Ans. The year-wise table above links to Collegedunia's question paper section - papers going back to 2014 with full solutions.
Ques. Does Section B make a big difference in JEE Main Physics marks?
Ans. Yes. Section B is 20 marks with no optional questions from 2026. Getting 4 out of 5 correct gives a 16-mark edge over students who leave even one blank.
Ques. Can I push JEE Main Physics from 60 to 90 marks in 30 days using sample papers?
Ans. If your concepts are in place, yes. The plan above targets that jump - untimed in Week 1, timed from Week 2.
