JEE Main 2027 is India’s largest engineering entrance exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in two sessions — Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April 2027. The exam is the gateway for admission to more than 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and over 50 Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) across India, and also serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced 2027, which determines admission to the 23 IITs. In 2026, more than 15.38 lakh unique candidates appeared across both sessions, and a similar or higher turnout is expected in 2027. As of August 2026, the JEE Main 2027 official notification has not been released; it is expected from NTA in October 2026, based on previous year patterns.
- Official Notification: JEE Main 2027 notification is expected to be released on jeemain.nta.nic.in in October 2026. In 2026, the Session 1 notification came out on October 28, 2025.
- Session 1 Registration: JEE Main 2027 Session 1 application form is expected to be available from November 2026. In 2026, the registration window was open from October 28 to November 22, 2025 — around 25 days.
- Session 1 Exam: JEE Main 2027 Session 1 Paper 1 is expected in the third or fourth week of January 2027. In 2026, it was held from January 21 to 29, 2026, across five days in two shifts each day.
- Session 2 Exam: JEE Main 2027 Session 2 Paper 1 is expected in the first week of April 2027. In 2026, Session 2 ran from April 2 to April 8, 2026, across multiple shifts.
What is JEE Main 2027?
JEE Main 2027 stands for Joint Entrance Examination (Main) 2027. NTA conducts it every year in two sessions — once in January and once in April — as the primary gateway for engineering aspirants in India. Qualifying JEE Main is mandatory for admission to undergraduate programs (B.E./B.Tech) at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The exam also serves as the screening test for JEE Advanced, which determines admission to all 23 IITs.
JEE Main has three papers. Paper 1 is for B.E./B.Tech aspirants and is the most popular. Paper 2A is for students applying to B.Arch programs, and Paper 2B is for B.Planning. All three papers are conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode, except the Drawing section in Paper 2A, which remains pen-and-paper.
You can appear in both sessions or just one. If you appear in both, NTA takes your better NTA score for the final All India Rank (AIR). This gives students two chances in the same cycle, which significantly reduces risk. JEE Main is also one of the few exams where a single registration cycle gives you two separate attempts to improve your score.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria
Before you apply for JEE Main 2027, you should check all eligibility conditions carefully. Here are the main criteria set by NTA for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech). Paper 2A and 2B have additional or different subject requirements.
Class 12 Qualifying Exam Requirement
You should have passed Class 12 or an equivalent qualifying examination in 2025 or 2026. If you are appearing in Class 12 in 2027, you can also apply — you will need to submit your results when available. Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are NOT eligible for JEE Main 2027.
Mandatory Subjects for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech)
You must have Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in Class 12. The third subject can be Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or any technical vocational subject. Without Physics and Math in Class 12, you cannot appear in Paper 1.
For Paper 2A (B.Arch), the required subjects are Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology. For Paper 2B (B.Planning), Mathematics is mandatory along with any two other subjects from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or technical vocational subjects.
Minimum Marks in Class 12
NTA has restored the 75% marks requirement in Class 12 for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. You need at least 75% aggregate in your Class 12 board exams to be eligible for seat allotment in these institutes. SC and ST candidates need at least 65%.
The 75% criterion is for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission only — not for appearing in the exam. You can still appear in JEE Main 2027 with less than 75% marks in Class 12, but your rank will not be valid for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission.
Age Limit
There is no age limit to appear in JEE Main 2027. NTA removed the upper age bar from JEE Main several years ago. Any student who has passed or is appearing in Class 12 can apply, regardless of their age.
Number of Attempts
You can appear in JEE Main for 3 consecutive years starting from the year of your first attempt. Both sessions in a single year count as ONE attempt year, not two. So if 2027 is your first year, you can also appear in 2028 and 2029. After three years, you are no longer eligible.
| Criteria | Details |
|---|---|
| Qualifying Exam (Class 12 or Equivalent) | Passed in 2025 or 2026, or appearing in 2027 |
| Mandatory Subjects (Paper 1 — B.E./B.Tech) | Physics and Mathematics are compulsory |
| Mandatory Subjects (Paper 2A — B.Arch) | Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology |
| Mandatory Subjects (Paper 2B — B.Planning) | Mathematics + any 2 subjects |
| Minimum Marks in Class 12 | 75% (General / OBC / EWS); 65% (SC / ST) — for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission |
| Age Limit | No age limit |
| Maximum Attempts | 3 consecutive years (both sessions in one year = 1 attempt year) |

JEE Main 2027 Admit Card
NTA releases the JEE Main admit card separately for Session 1 and Session 2. You can download it from your official login on jeemain.nta.nic.in using your application number and password. NTA does not send admit cards by post — the only way to get it is online.
For JEE Main 2027, the Session 1 admit card is expected in January 2027 — usually 7 to 10 days before the exam begins. In 2026, the Session 1 admit card was released on January 18, 2026, for exams starting January 21, 2026. The Session 2 admit card is expected in late March or early April 2027.
Before the admit card, NTA releases a City Intimation Slip. The slip tells you your exam city — it comes out a few days before the admit card. Once the slip is out, you can plan your travel and accommodation. You cannot change your exam city after the correction window has closed.
What to Carry on JEE Main 2027 Exam Day
- Printed Admit Card: Must be on A4 paper — photocopies are not allowed
- Original Photo ID: Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, voter ID, or driving licence
- Passport-size photograph: Same photo as uploaded in the application form
- Category / PwD certificate: If applicable (check your admit card for exact document list)
Mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth earphones, calculators, and all electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall. Carry only the allowed documents listed on your admit card to avoid being barred from the exam centre.
JEE Main 2027 Answer Key
NTA releases the JEE Main provisional answer key for Paper 1 within a few days after the last exam shift of each session. For 2027, the Session 1 provisional answer key is expected in late January or early February 2027, and the Session 2 answer key in mid-to-late April 2027.
After the provisional answer key is published, NTA opens an objection window — usually 2 to 3 days — where you can challenge specific answers by paying Rs. 200 per question online. If your objection is accepted, the answer is revised in the final key and your fee is refunded. If rejected, the fee is not returned. NTA then releases the Final Answer Key before or along with the result, and all scores are calculated using only the final key.
- Provisional Answer Key: Released a few days after the last exam date for each session
- Objection Window: 2–3 days to challenge answers online (Rs. 200 per question)
- Final Answer Key: Released just before or along with the result; used for score calculation
In 2026, NTA revised some answers in the Session 2 paper after reviewing objections before declaring the final result on April 20, 2026. Reviewing the answer key carefully before the objection window closes can help you recover marks if NTA has made an error.
JEE Main 2027 Result
NTA declares JEE Main results separately for each session. After Session 1, you get a percentile score and subject-wise raw scores. The final All India Rank (AIR) is released only after Session 2 — it is calculated from the best NTA score across both sessions for candidates who appeared in both.
In 2026, Session 1 result was declared on February 16, 2026 — about 18 days after the last exam date (January 29). Session 2 result came out on April 20, 2026 — about 12 days after the last exam date (April 8). In 2027, a similar turnaround is expected, so plan accordingly if you need the result before applying to other exams or colleges.
How is the JEE Main 2027 Result Calculated?
NTA uses a percentile-based normalization system. Because the exam runs in multiple shifts over multiple days, each shift may have a different difficulty level. Normalization makes the scoring fair — your raw score is converted into a percentile that reflects your performance relative to all candidates who appeared in your session, not just your shift.
- Each session scorecard shows your NTA Score (percentile, 0 to 100) and subject-wise NTA scores for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics
- If you appear in both sessions, NTA considers the better of the two NTA scores for the final AIR
- The final AIR is released after Session 2 along with the qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2027
- Around 2,50,000 candidates qualify for JEE Advanced each cycle, distributed as per category-wise caps
- In case of a tie in NTA score, NTA applies tiebreaker rules: higher marks in Math first, then Physics, then Chemistry, then age (older candidate gets preference)
In 2026, 12 candidates scored 100 percentile in Session 1, and 26 candidates scored 100 percentile in Session 2. The broader merit list for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission and for JEE Advanced used the best-of-two NTA score for candidates who appeared in both sessions.
JEE Main 2027 Marks vs Rank
Your rank in JEE Main 2027 depends on your NTA score (percentile), which reflects your performance relative to all other candidates — not just your raw marks. Because difficulty varies across shifts, the same rank can correspond to different marks in different shifts. The table below uses JEE Main 2026 data as a reference to help you estimate where you might stand in 2027.
JEE Main Marks vs Percentile vs Rank — 2026 Reference Table
| Percentile (Approx.) | Estimated AIR | Approximate Marks out of 300 (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 Percentile | 1–38 (38 candidates scored 100 percentile across both 2026 sessions) | 300/300 |
| 99.99 Percentile | Up to ~150 | 275–290 |
| 99.9 Percentile | Up to ~1,500 | 245–265 |
| 99 Percentile | ~8,000–10,000 | 200–215 |
| 98 Percentile | ~16,000–20,000 | 185–200 |
| 95 Percentile | ~40,000–70,000 | 155–175 |
| 90 Percentile | ~1,00,000–1,40,000 | 130–150 |
| 85 Percentile | ~1,80,000–2,10,000 | 110–130 |
| 80 Percentile | ~2,40,000–2,70,000 | 90–110 |
These figures are based on JEE Main 2026 trends and are estimates. Actual 2027 marks vs rank will depend on paper difficulty, total candidates in each shift, and the normalization outcome. Rank ranges can shift by 5–15% from year to year based on paper difficulty and candidate pool size.
For NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admission through JoSAA, what matters is your AIR, not your percentile alone. Top NITs for CSE generally need an AIR under 5,000 in the General category. To get into any NIT for any branch, an AIR under 50,000 is usually sufficient for most programs.
JEE Main 2027 Cutoff
There are two types of cutoffs in JEE Main — the qualifying cutoff (for JEE Advanced eligibility) and the admission cutoff (JoSAA closing ranks for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs). They are entirely different and serve different purposes.
JEE Main Qualifying Cutoff for JEE Advanced — 2026 Actual (Reference for 2027)
NTA releases the category-wise qualifying percentile together with the Session 2 final result. Candidates whose AIR falls within the category-wise cutoff become eligible to appear in JEE Advanced. In 2026, around 2,50,182 candidates qualified for JEE Advanced 2026. The cutoff rose slightly in most categories compared to 2025, reflecting a larger and more competitive candidate pool.
| Category | Qualifying Percentile (2026) | Qualifying Percentile (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| General (CRL) | 93.4123549 | 93.1023043 |
| General-EWS | 82.4164528 | 81.3267051 |
| OBC-NCL | 80.9232583 | 78.1761671 |
| SC | 63.9172792 | 60.2031627 |
| ST | 52.0174712 | 46.9217558 |
| PwD | 0.0013527 | 0.0009685 |
JEE Main 2027 qualifying cutoff will be released by NTA along with the Session 2 result, expected in April–May 2027. The 2026 cutoffs above are for reference only.
JEE Main Cutoff for Top NITs (JoSAA 2026 Closing Ranks — Reference)
The admission cutoff for NITs is the JoSAA closing rank — the AIR of the last student to receive a seat in a given program. These closing ranks vary by branch, institute, category, and home/other state quota. The table below shows approximate JoSAA 2026 closing ranks for CSE in the General category (Other State quota) as a reference for JEE Main 2027 aspirants.
| Institute | Branch | JoSAA 2026 Closing Rank (OS, Gen) |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Trichy | Computer Science and Engineering | ~1,100 |
| NIT Warangal | Computer Science and Engineering | ~1,800 |
| NIT Surathkal (NITK) | Computer Science and Engineering | ~2,100 |
| NIT Delhi | Computer Science and Engineering | ~3,000 |
| NIT Calicut | Computer Science and Engineering | ~3,500 |
| NIT Rourkela | Computer Science and Engineering | ~4,500 |
| MNIT Jaipur | Computer Science and Engineering | ~5,000 |
| NIT Allahabad (MNNIT) | Computer Science and Engineering | ~5,500 |
OS = Other State quota. Home State (HS) quota seats have a separate closing rank. 2027 JoSAA cutoffs will be released after JoSAA 2027 counselling concludes, expected around July 2027. Figures above are from JoSAA 2026 and are approximations.
JEE Main 2027 Counselling: JoSAA Process
After the JEE Main 2027 final result and AIR are declared, seat allotment for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs happens through JoSAA — the Joint Seat Allocation Authority. JoSAA also manages IIT seats for JEE Advanced qualifiers. The JoSAA 2027 counselling is expected to begin in June 2027, based on the 2026 cycle (which started June 2, 2026).
Institutes Under JoSAA Counselling
- 23 IITs — admissions based on JEE Advanced rank
- 31 NITs — admissions based on JEE Main AIR
- 26 IIITs — admissions based on JEE Main AIR
- IIEST Shibpur and IISc Bangalore — special institutes with distinct eligibility
- 56 GFTIs — admissions based on JEE Main AIR
Candidates who only qualify JEE Main (not JEE Advanced) can only participate in JoSAA for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. IIT seats are allotted only to candidates with a valid JEE Advanced 2027 rank.
JoSAA Counselling — Step-by-Step Process
- Step 1 — Register on JoSAA Portal: Use your JEE Main application number and password to register at the JoSAA website after results are out.
- Step 2 — Choice Filling and Locking: Enter and rank your preferred college-branch combinations. You can fill unlimited choices. Filling more choices gives you more options in later rounds.
- Step 3 — Round-wise Seat Allotment: JoSAA runs multiple rounds. In 2026, there were 5 rounds — Round 1 on June 13, 2026, and the final Round 5 on July 16, 2026. In 2027, a similar 5-round schedule is expected.
- Step 4 — Accept Seat Online: After each round, accept your allotted seat online, upload required documents, and pay the seat acceptance fee (part of the first semester fee).
- Step 5 — Float, Slide, or Freeze: If you get a seat in round 1, you can choose to ’Float’ (stay in for a better seat in higher rounds), ’Slide’ (stay in the same institute but try for a better branch), or ’Freeze’ (keep your current seat and exit the further rounds).
In JoSAA 2026, a total of 67,323 seats were available across all institutes, with the process running from June 2 to July 16, 2026. Candidates who opt for IIT seats through JoSAA must have a valid JEE Advanced rank. For NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats, a valid JEE Main rank is sufficient.
Apart from JoSAA, many states run their own counselling for B.Tech seats based on JEE Main scores. States like Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and others accept JEE Main scores for state engineering seats through separate counselling portals.

JEE Main 2027 Preparation Tips
JEE Main 2027 will be held in January and April 2027. If you are in Class 11 right now (August 2026), you have more than a year to prepare. If you are in Class 12, Session 1 is roughly 5 months away. Here are focused, practical tips to help you maximize your JEE Main 2027 score.
Build Your Foundation with NCERT First
The JEE Main syllabus is directly derived from NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 textbooks. For Chemistry — especially Inorganic and theory-heavy Organic chapters — NCERT alone is often sufficient to get full marks. For Physics and Mathematics, NCERT builds the foundation but additional practice books are needed for numerical problem-solving. Never skip NCERT examples and exercises.
Subject-wise Strategy
- Physics: Focus on Mechanics (Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Rotational Motion), Electrostatics, Current Electricity, and Modern Physics — these areas carry the most questions. Solve numericals daily. Understand formulas with their derivations rather than memorizing them blindly, so you can apply them in new situations.
- Chemistry: Split your preparation into three parts. Physical Chemistry needs consistent numerical practice (Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry). Organic Chemistry requires knowing reaction mechanisms — draw them out step by step. Inorganic Chemistry is best covered through NCERT and concise revision tables for s-, p-, d-, and f-block elements.
- Mathematics: Calculus (Differential + Integral) is the single biggest scoring area in JEE Main — master it first. Then focus on Coordinate Geometry and Algebra. Practice a large volume of problems in these topics to build both speed and accuracy. Mathematics requires regular timed practice far more than reading theory.
Mock Tests and Previous Year Papers are Non-Negotiable
You should solve JEE Main previous year papers from 2018 onwards — especially since NTA took over and introduced the current pattern. NTA also releases official free mock tests on its website that simulate the exact CBT interface. This is crucial because the real exam environment feels different from paper-based practice. In the last 3 months before the exam, attempt at least 2 full-length mock tests every week under timed conditions.
Section B Strategy: Zero Negative Marking is Your Advantage
Section B (Numerical) has no negative marking. This means you should always attempt all 5 numerical questions in each subject, even when you are not fully confident. A calculated guess or a partially worked-out solution can earn you 4 marks for free. Many students skip Section B numericals — which is a mistake. Spending focused time on Section B calculations can add 20 to 40 marks to your total, which can lift your percentile significantly.
Track Your Weak Areas and Revise Regularly
Make short revision notes for formulas, reaction mechanisms, and key theorems. Revise them every week, not just before the exam. After each mock test, identify the topics where you consistently lose marks. Spend additional time on those weak areas instead of re-practicing topics you already handle well. Balanced preparation across all three subjects is essential — even a weak performance in one subject can drag your percentile down noticeably because each subject’s NTA score contributes to your overall NTA score.
FAQs
Ques. When will JEE Main 2027 notification be released?
Ans. The JEE Main 2027 official notification has not been released yet as of August 2026. Based on the previous year cycle, NTA is expected to release the JEE Main 2027 notification in October 2026 on jeemain.nta.nic.in. In 2026, the notification was released on October 28, 2025. You should keep checking the official website for announcements.
Ques. How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main 2027?
Ans. You can attempt JEE Main for 3 consecutive years starting from the year of your first attempt. Both sessions (Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April) within a single year count as one attempt year, not two. So if 2027 is your first year, you can also appear in 2028 and 2029. After that, you are no longer eligible to appear in JEE Main.
Ques. Is there negative marking in JEE Main 2027?
Ans. Yes, there is negative marking in Section A (MCQ) of Paper 1. You lose 1 mark for every wrong answer in Section A. However, Section B (Numerical Value Questions) has no negative marking — wrong or unattempted answers in Section B get 0 marks, not -1. This makes Section B a safe scoring opportunity, and you should always attempt all 5 allowed questions in each subject’s Section B.
Ques. What is the eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2027?
Ans. To be eligible for JEE Main 2027, you should have passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or be appearing in Class 12 in 2027. Physics and Mathematics must be compulsory subjects for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech). There is no age limit. For admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, you need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST). Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible.
Ques. Can I appear in both sessions of JEE Main 2027?
Ans. Yes, you can appear in both JEE Main 2027 Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April). If you appear in both, NTA uses the better of your two NTA scores for the final All India Rank. Appearing in both sessions is strongly recommended for serious candidates because it gives you a second chance to improve your score without any penalty — both sessions combined count as just one year of your 3-attempt limit.
Ques. What is the qualifying percentile (cutoff) for JEE Main 2027?
Ans. NTA will release the JEE Main 2027 qualifying cutoff (for JEE Advanced eligibility) along with the Session 2 result, expected in April–May 2027. For reference, in 2026 the General category qualifying percentile was 93.41, OBC-NCL was 80.92, SC was 63.91, ST was 52.01, and EWS was 82.41. In 2027, similar or slightly revised cutoffs are expected depending on paper difficulty and total candidates.
Ques. How is JEE Main 2027 rank calculated?
Ans. JEE Main rank is based on your NTA score (percentile), not raw marks alone. NTA uses a normalization formula to convert raw scores to percentiles because the exam runs across multiple shifts with varying difficulty. If you appear in both sessions, your better NTA score is used for the final AIR. In case of a tie in NTA score, NTA applies tiebreakers in this order: higher marks in Mathematics first, then Physics, then Chemistry, then age (older candidate gets better rank).
Ques. Is 75% in Class 12 mandatory for JEE Main 2027?
Ans. The 75% rule is not required to appear in JEE Main 2027, but it is required for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. If you score below 75% in Class 12 (or below 65% if you belong to SC/ST), you can still sit for JEE Main and get an AIR — but that rank will not be considered for seat allotment via JoSAA in these central institutes. Many private engineering colleges and state universities accept JEE Main score without the 75% condition, so check each institute’s specific eligibility rules.
Ques. What is the JEE Main 2027 application fee?
Ans. Based on JEE Main 2026 fees, the application fee per session for General category male candidates is Rs. 1,000 and for female candidates is Rs. 800. SC, ST, PwD, and Transgender candidates pay Rs. 500 per session. The official 2027 fee will be confirmed in the NTA notification expected in October 2026. The fee is non-refundable in all circumstances, even if you do not appear for the exam.
Ques. What rank is needed to get into a top NIT for CSE in JEE Main 2027?
Ans. For top NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, or NIT Surathkal for Computer Science and Engineering in the General category (Other State quota), you typically need a JEE Main AIR under 2,000–3,000. In 2026 JoSAA, NIT Trichy CSE closed around AIR 1,100 (OS quota). For mid-tier NITs and branches like ECE or Electrical, an AIR between 10,000 and 30,000 is usually sufficient. Closing ranks vary significantly by quota (home state vs. other state) and category.
Ques. How many students appear for JEE Main every year?
Ans. JEE Main is one of the largest engineering entrance exams in the world. In 2026, more than 15.38 lakh unique candidates appeared across both sessions, out of 16.04 lakh registrations. From 2022 to 2024, JEE Main registrations grew by about 29%. For JEE Main 2027, a similar or higher turnout — around 15–16 lakh unique candidates — is expected.
Ques. Is JEE Main 2027 conducted in regional languages?
Ans. Yes, JEE Main is conducted in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. You can choose your preferred medium during the application process. Once your language preference is set, it cannot be changed after the form submission deadline, so choose carefully at the time of registration.
