JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria require you to have passed or be appearing in Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects — there is no upper age limit for the exam.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) defines who can apply for JEE Main 2027. You must confirm your eligibility across four areas: academic qualification, subject combination, Class 12 passing year, and number of attempts. Students who do not meet these norms are disqualified even after scoring well in the exam. Meeting the exam eligibility does not automatically guarantee admission to NITs or IIITs — separate marks criteria apply at the counselling stage.
- No upper age limit — NTA removed the age cap for JEE Main.
- Students who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027, are eligible.
- Minimum 5 subjects in Class 12, including Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- For NIT/IIIT/CFTI admission: 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or top 20 percentile in the state board.
- Maximum 3 consecutive years of JEE Main attempts starting from the year of first Class 12 appearance.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility Criteria Overview
JEE Main 2027 is conducted by NTA for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Planning programmes at NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions. The eligibility norms cover age, academic qualification, subject combination, and attempt limits. Check the complete overview in the table below before filling your application form.
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Age Limit | No upper age limit |
| Qualifying Exam | Class 12 or equivalent from a recognised board |
| Year of Passing | 2025, 2026, or appearing in 2027 |
| Compulsory Subjects | Physics and Mathematics (plus at least one more) |
| Minimum Marks for NIT/IIIT Admission | 75% aggregate (General/OBC); 65% (SC/ST/PwD) |
| Number of Attempts | 3 consecutive years from first Class 12 appearance |
JEE Main 2027 Age Limit
There is no upper age limit to appear in JEE Main 2027. NTA removed the age restriction in recent years, making the exam open to all students who satisfy the academic and attempt-count criteria. Previously, the age cap was 25 years for General category and 30 years for SC/ST/PwD — that rule no longer applies.
Your eligibility for JEE Main 2027 is determined entirely by your Class 12 passing year and subject combination, not your date of birth. There is also no minimum age floor specified by NTA.
JEE Main 2027 Academic Qualification
You must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or an equivalent qualifying examination from a recognised board to be eligible for JEE Main 2027. Students who are appearing in Class 12 in 2027 can also apply — they must submit their Class 12 marksheet at the time of JoSAA counselling if they qualify.
The passing year condition is strict:
- Students who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 are eligible.
- Students appearing in Class 12 in 2027 are eligible.
- Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Main 2027.
For admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs through JoSAA counselling, you must also secure one of the following:
- 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (for General and OBC-NCL students)
- 65% aggregate marks in Class 12 (for SC, ST, and PwD students)
- Or placement in the top 20 percentile of your respective state board
This marks requirement applies to seat allotment only — it does not affect your eligibility to sit the JEE Main 2027 exam.
JEE Main 2027 Subject Requirements
You must have studied at least 5 subjects in Class 12, with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. The third science subject must be one of the following:
- Chemistry
- Biology or Biotechnology
- Technical Vocational Subject
- Any other subject approved by NTA
The subject requirement varies slightly by programme. Check the table below:
| Programme | Compulsory Class 12 Subjects |
|---|---|
| B.Tech / B.E. | Physics, Mathematics, and one of Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology |
| B.Arch | Mathematics (Physics and Chemistry are also strongly recommended) |
| B.Planning | Mathematics |
Students who did not study the required subjects in Class 12 are ineligible to apply, regardless of their marks or rank.
JEE Main 2027 Number of Attempts
You can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years, starting from the year you first appeared in or passed Class 12. Since JEE Main is held in two sessions per year (Session 1 in January and Session 2 in April), you can potentially sit the exam up to 6 times within your 3-year window.
Here is how the attempt limit works based on your Class 12 year:
| Class 12 Passing / Appearing Year | Eligible for JEE Main 2027? | Last Eligible JEE Main Year |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Yes | 2027 |
| 2026 | Yes | 2028 |
| 2027 (appearing) | Yes | 2029 |
| 2024 or earlier | No | — |
Your best NTA score across all sessions attempted in a given year is used for rank calculation. Each session counts as a separate attempt, but both sessions in the same year fall within a single academic year of your 3-year window.
JEE Main 2027 Category-Wise Eligibility Relaxations
NTA provides relaxations in the Class 12 marks threshold for admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. These relaxations apply only to the qualifying marks requirement for seat allotment — the number of attempts and subject requirements are the same for all categories.
| Category | Minimum Class 12 Marks for NIT/IIIT/CFTI Admission |
|---|---|
| General | 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile in state board |
| EWS | 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile in state board |
| OBC-NCL | 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile in state board |
| SC | 65% aggregate or top 20 percentile in state board |
| ST | 65% aggregate or top 20 percentile in state board |
| PwD (all categories) | 65% aggregate or top 20 percentile in state board |
Seat reservation at NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs follows the Government of India policy: 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 10% for EWS of the total seats available in each programme.
