JEE Main 2027 Age Limit: No Age Restriction
There is no upper or lower age limit for JEE Main 2027. NTA removed the age limit for JEE Main in 2021, following the new National Education Policy (NEP). Before this change, the upper age limit was 25 years for General and OBC-NCL candidates and 30 years for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
Now, any student who meets the Class 12 qualification and the year of passing condition can apply for JEE Main 2027, regardless of age. This means even if you are older than 25, you can still appear for JEE Main as long as you meet the other conditions.
However, individual institutions may have their own age requirements for admission. Some IITs and NITs set a separate age condition for their programmes. You should check the admission rules of each institution you want to apply to, in addition to the JEE Main eligibility.

Year of Passing for JEE Main 2027
This is one of the most important conditions to check before applying. For JEE Main 2027, you must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 in 2025, 2026, or 2027. Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Main 2027.
| Year of Passing Class 12 | Eligible for JEE Main 2027? |
|---|---|
| 2027 (Appearing) | Yes |
| 2026 | Yes |
| 2025 | Yes |
| 2024 | No |
| 2023 or earlier | No |
Important: If you passed Class 12 in 2024, you are not eligible for JEE Main 2027. Your last eligible year was JEE Main 2026.
If you passed Class 12 in 2025 and already appeared for JEE Main in 2025 and 2026, this is your final year. You will have used all three consecutive attempts after JEE Main 2027.

JEE Main 2027 Minimum Marks in Class 12
There is no minimum percentage required in Class 12 to appear for JEE Main 2027. Any student who passes Class 12 with the required subjects can apply, regardless of the percentage they score in Class 12.
Marks Required for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI Admission Through JoSAA
While there is no minimum marks requirement to appear for JEE Main, you need to meet a Class 12 marks condition to get admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling.
| Category | Minimum Class 12 Marks for Admission |
|---|---|
| General (UR) | 75% in Class 12 OR top 20 percentile of your board |
| OBC-NCL | 75% in Class 12 OR top 20 percentile of your board |
| SC | 65% in Class 12 |
| ST | 65% in Class 12 |
| PwD | 65% in Class 12 |
Note: This marks condition applies to JoSAA admission, not to sitting the JEE Main 2027 exam.
What Is the Top 20 Percentile Condition?
The top 20 percentile condition means you should be in the top 20% of students who passed Class 12 from your board in the same year. For example, if 5 lakh students passed Class 12 from your state board, you need to be in the top 1 lakh students by marks to qualify. Even if your percentage is 73% or 74%, you can still meet the condition if you are in the top 20 percentile of your board.
NTA calculates the top 20 percentile cutoff separately for each board every year after Class 12 results are declared. You can check the board-wise top 20 percentile cutoff on the NTA official website after results are out.

JEE Main 2027 Subject Requirements
The subjects you studied in Class 12 determine your eligibility for each JEE Main 2027 paper. You must have studied at least 5 subjects in Class 12, including the subjects required for the paper you want to appear in.
Subject Requirements for B.E./B.Tech (Paper 1)
For the JEE Main Paper 1, you must have studied the following subjects in Class 12:
- Physics — compulsory
- Mathematics — compulsory
- Any one of these: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, or a Technical Vocational subject
Subject Requirements for B.Arch (Paper 2A)
For JEE Main Paper 2A, you must have studied all three of these subjects in Class 12:
- Physics — compulsory
- Chemistry — compulsory
- Mathematics — compulsory
For admission to B.Arch at NITs through JoSAA, you also need at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) combined in Class 12.
Subject Requirements for B.Planning (Paper 2B)
For JEE Main Paper 2B, you only need to have studied Mathematics in Class 12. You can be from any stream — Science, Commerce, or Arts — as long as you studied Mathematics.
| Paper | Programme | Compulsory Subjects | Any One Optional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | B.E./B.Tech | Physics, Mathematics | Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational |
| Paper 2A | B.Arch | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | Not applicable |

Number of Attempts Allowed in JEE Main 2027
You can appear for JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years. Since JEE Main is conducted twice a year — usually in January and April — you can appear in both sessions each year. Both sessions in one year count as one year of attempt, not two. This means you can appear for JEE Main a total of 6 times across your 3 eligible years.
How Does the 3-Year Rule Work?
The 3 consecutive years are calculated from the year you first appear in JEE Main. Here is how this works in practice:
| First JEE Main Attempt | Years You Can Appear | Last Eligible Year |
|---|---|---|
| JEE Main 2025 | 2025, 2026, 2027 | JEE Main 2027 |
| JEE Main 2026 | 2026, 2027, 2028 | JEE Main 2028 |
| JEE Main 2027 | 2027, 2028, 2029 | JEE Main 2029 |
Important: If you passed Class 12 in 2025 and appeared in JEE Main 2025 and 2026, this is your last chance. You cannot appear in JEE Main 2028 or later.
Does Skipping a Year Count as an Attempt?
The 3 consecutive years rule is based on the year you first appeared in JEE Main. If you first appeared in JEE Main 2025, your three years are 2025, 2026, and 2027, even if you skip 2026. You cannot appear in 2028, even if you did not take the exam in 2026.
If you are appearing for the first time in JEE Main 2027 and passed Class 12 in 2027, your three years start from 2027. You can still appear in 2028 and 2029.
Session-wise Attempt Count
Since NTA conducts two sessions of JEE Main every year, appearing in Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April) both in one year counts as one year of attempt. Your best score from all sessions is used for ranking and JoSAA counselling.

JEE Main 2027 Paper-wise Eligibility
JEE Main 2027 has three papers — Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech, Paper 2A for B.Arch, and Paper 2B for B.Planning. You can apply for more than one paper if you meet the subject conditions for each. The JEE Main 2027 eligibility conditions differ slightly for each paper.
| Paper | For Admission to | Required Subjects in Class 12 | Additional Condition for Admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | B.E./B.Tech | Physics, Mathematics + one more | None |
| Paper 2A | B.Arch | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | 50% in PCM combined for NIT B.Arch seats |
| Paper 2B | B.Planning | Mathematics (any stream) | None |
You can appear for both Paper 2A and Paper 2B in the same exam if you want to apply to both B.Arch and B.Planning programmes. You can also take Paper 1 along with Paper 2A or 2B.

NTA follows the Government of India reservation policy for seat allocation through JoSAA counselling. Here is the category-wise reservation at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs:
- OBC-NCL: 27% of total seats
- SC: 15% of total seats
- ST: 7.5% of total seats
- EWS: 10% of total seats
- PwD: 5% horizontal reservation across all categories
| Category | Class 12 Marks for NIT/IIIT Admission | Seat Reservation |
|---|---|---|
| General (UR) | 75% or top 20 percentile | Open seats (no reservation) |
| EWS | 75% or top 20 percentile | 10% |
| OBC-NCL | 75% or top 20 percentile | 27% |
| SC | 65% | 15% |
| ST | 65% | 7.5% |
| PwD | 65% | 5% horizontal |
OBC-NCL Eligibility Note
To claim OBC-NCL reservation in JoSAA counselling, your non-creamy layer (NCL) certificate must be valid for the academic year 2027-28 and issued by a competent government authority. If your family income exceeds the OBC-NCL limit, you are treated as a General category candidate for seat allotment.
PwD Eligibility Note
Students with a disability of 40% or more can claim PwD category benefits. You need a valid disability certificate from a government-recognised medical authority, clearly stating the percentage of disability.
