JEE Main Fundamental and Derived Units Weightage by Year
As per JEE Main fundamental and derived units weightage from past years, students can expect 0 to 2 questions from this topic in a year, and none at all in some years. The 2024 papers had no question from it.
| Year | Questions | Weightage in Physics | Change in Weightage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 1 | 0.21% | −50.00% |
| 2025 | 2 | 0.42% | n/a |
| 2024 | 0 | 0.00% | −100.00% |
| 2023 | 1 | 0.14% | −4.17% |
| 2022 | 1 | 0.14% | −43.48% |
The 2021 papers add 2 more questions. Weightage is the topic's share of all Physics questions in the bank for that year.
What the Questions Ask
Five of the seven questions are match-the-list items. You are given four quantities and four units written in base SI form, and you pair them: torque with N m, stress with N m−2, latent heat with J kg−1, power with N m s−1, and so on.
The other two give a relation between physical quantities, such as permittivity, electric field and time, or electric field and magnetising field, and ask for the unit of the combination. Both are settled by writing each quantity in base units and cancelling.
| Question Style | Questions | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Match the list: quantity to unit | 5 | 2021, 2022, 2023, 2025 (two) |
| Unit of a combination of quantities | 2 | 2021, 2026 |
How to Practise This Topic
With only 7 questions, the set is a quick one. Attempt all of them in one sitting, then rewrite each unit in kg, m and s to see why the pairing holds.
For the match-the-list questions, note which quantities return. Torque appears in two of the lists and latent heat in two. Once the base forms are memorised, each match takes under a minute.
