GATE 2027 Preparation Tips

With the GATE 2027 exam in February 2027, you have around 3 months left from today (October 2026). This is enough time to cover the full syllabus and practice well if you follow a structured plan.

Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy

  • Prioritize Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude first: Together, these two sections carry 28 marks (13 + 15). Many candidates skip General Aptitude during preparation and lose easy marks on exam day. Practice both from day one.
  • Focus on high-weightage topics in your paper: In CS, Algorithms, Operating Systems, and Computer Networks typically carry the most marks. In EC, Signals and Systems, Control Systems, and Analog Circuits are critical. Identify your paper’s high-weightage units from previous year question analysis and cover those first.
  • Use standard textbooks, not just notes: GATE questions come directly from standard textbooks. For CS, Cormen (Algorithms) and Tanenbaum (Networks, OS) are essential. For EE, Nagrath & Kothari and Hayt & Kemmerly are standard references. Reading the original textbook is more effective than relying on short notes alone.
  • Solve previous year question papers: Solving the last 10 years of GATE question papers for your subject is the single most effective preparation activity. PYQs reveal the exact topics, question style, and difficulty level better than any coaching material.
  • Take full-length mock tests: Start taking full-length 3-hour mock tests at least 6–8 weeks before the exam. Practice switching between MCQ, MSQ, and NAT question types within the same time limit.
  • NAT questions are free attempts: Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions carry no negative marks. Never leave an NAT question unanswered — always write your best estimate.
  • Revise with formula sheets: The GATE syllabus is large. Make short formula sheets and concept summaries for each chapter so you can revise everything quickly in the last 2–3 weeks before the exam.

GATE 2027 Last 3 Months Study Plan

Month Focus Area
November 2026 Complete Engineering Mathematics + 2–3 high-weightage core subjects
December 2026 Complete remaining core subjects + start PYQ practice (last 5 years)
January 2027 Solve full 10-year PYQ set + take 6–8 full-length mock tests + revise weak areas
1st–3rd week of February 2027 Final revision only — no new topics, only formula sheets, PYQ revisit, and timed practice
  • Time Management on Exam Day: With 65 questions in 3 hours, you have an average of about 2 minutes 45 seconds per question. Do not spend more than 3 minutes on a single MCQ — flag difficult questions and return to them after completing the rest of the paper.
  • General Aptitude: Spend 20–30 minutes daily on Verbal and Numerical Aptitude practice. This section is reliable scoring ground if you practice regularly and should not be left for last-minute preparation.
