GATE Eligibility 2019: Check Age limit and Qualifying Criteria

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2019 mandates a candidate to hold a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university/ institute in order to apply for the exam. IIT Madras will be announcing GATE eligibility criteria with the announcement of GATE 2019 notification. All the applicants are requested to check the GATE eligibility criteria before submitting the application form.

There is no minimum or maximum age limit prescribed to appear for the examination. GATE eligibility critieria 2019 consists of nationality, academic qualifications and age limit criteria. There is no limit on number of attempts to appear or apply for the exam. However, the eligibility for M.Tech admission through GATE score may vary as per the participating institute. Go through the following article to know more information on GATE Eligibility Criteria 2019. 

Qualifying Degree wise GATE Eligibility Criteria 

Eligibility for B.E./B.Tech/B.Pharm. Students

  • Passed a Bachelor degree (4 years after 10+2 or 3-years after Diploma in Engineering/Technology) in Engineering/ Technology or currently in the final year of the degree.
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2019

Eligibility for B.Arch Students

  • Passed a 5-years Bachelor degree in Architecture or currently in the final year of degree
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2019

Eligibility for B.Sc. (Research) Students

  • Passed a Bachelor's degree in Science (Post-Diploma/ 4-years after 10+2) or currently appearing (4th year) of degree
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2019

Eligibility for M.Sc., MA, MCA Students

  • Passed a Master’s degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent or currently appearing in the final year
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2019

Integrated M.E./M.Tech (Post B.Sc.) Post-B.Sc.

  • Passed a 4years Integrated Master’s degree programs in Engineering/Technology or are appearing in 2nd/3rd/4th year are also eligible
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2021

Eligibility for M.E./M.Tech. or Dual Degree (after Diploma or 10+2)

  • Passed a 5years Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual Degree program in Engineering /Technology or currently appearing in the 4th or 5th year
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2019

Eligibility for Integrated M.Sc. Integrated B.S./M.S. 

  • Passed Integrated M.Sc. or 5years Integrated B.S.- M.S. program or currently appearing in the final year
  • Year of qualification must not be later than 2019

Eligibility for Students having Degree from professional Society Examination (equivalent to B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch) 

  • Passed a B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch. or equivalent examinations, of Professional Societies, recognized by MHRD/UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India)
  • Completed Section A or equivalent of such professional courses 

Note: Professional Certificate/ Provisional Certificate/ Course Completion/ Membership Certificate issued by the Society or Institute Copy of Mark sheet for Section “A”.

GATE Eligibility for International Applicants

GATE 2019 enables the candidates from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates to seek admissions to M.Tech or PhD courses in various IITs and IISc Bangalore. The all India exam will be conducted in the mentioned countries for applicants from these nationalities. International candidates are required to satisfy the following GATE Eligibility Criteria:

  • Completed Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Master’s Degree in a relevant Science Subject.
  • Appearing for the final year of the degree course are also eligible.

GATE Eligibility for Candidates Having Backlog

Candidates who have backlogs (arrears/ failed subjects) in any paper of the qualifying degree or have appeared in the final year/ semester examination in 2019 should do the following either

  • Submit a copy of any one of the marks sheets of the final year or
  • Have to obtain a declaration from their Principal along with the signature and seal beforehand and upload the same during the online submission of the application form

Important Notes:

  • If a candidate has passed any one of the qualifying examination as given above in 2017 or earlier then such candidates have to submit the course completion certificate/degree certificate/membership certificate/professional certificate and provisional certificate issued by the society or institute.
  • If any candidate is expected to complete any one of the qualifying degree in 2019 or later as given above then such candidate has to submit a certificate from Principal or a copy of marks card for section A of AMIE.

Certificate from Principal: Candidates who have to submit a certificate from their college Principal have to obtain one from his/her institution beforehand and upload the same during the online submission of the application form.

GATE Exam Paper with Codes

At present GATE is held in 23 disciplines/subjects. A candidate can appear only in any one paper of the following disciplines.

CE, CS, EC, EE and ME Papers: Examination may be conducted in multiple sessions due to increase in the number of applicants.

Engineering Sciences (XE) and Life Science (XL) papers are of general nature. These two papers comprise the following sections. For XE Paper, Engineering Mathematics is the compulsory section while for XL, Chemistry is the compulsory section.

Documents for Reserved Category

Candidates will require the following certificates for each and every category for GATE exam. Here we will provide you the certificate form and format link.

  • SC/ ST certificate (click here for Format and Form)
  • OBC certificate is not required in taking GATE Exam but it will be mandated to present while taking admission.
  • PWD Certificate if he/ she has at least 40% disability as per government rules

What is GATE Eligibility Certificate?

It is a final year mark sheet/Certificate from HOD/Institute. The document should be a scanned copy of degree or provisional certificate in pdf format. The size should not exceed 300KB while uploading the document while filling GATE Application Form.

In case a candidate has not received the degree or provisional certificate from the university/institute then a Certificate from Principle (for use as the eligibility certificate only for final year or backlog candidates) can be uploaded. The minimum size of the eligibility certificate is 10KB.

GATE Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech Admissions

Qualifying GATE 2019 examination is mandatory for M.Tech admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs. As no counselling is held through GATE thus applicants will have to apply separately where they wish to take admissions. For M.Tech admission in IITs, register through COAP and for admission in NITs, IIITs and CFTIs, register through Centralized Counselling – CCMT.  

GATE Eligibility FAQs

Ques: I have backlogs during qualifying degree program, due to which I did not complete the program. I am currently not studying in college and therefore cannot get duly signed certificate from HOD/Institute. Which document do I need to upload while filling GATE application form?

Ans: If you cannot get a duly signed certificate from HOD/Institute then you should submit final year mark sheet of any one semester, even if there are backlogs in some subjects.

Ques: I have completed my graduation in 2018, but my Institute has still not provided me either with degree certificate or provisional certificate, which document should I upload as GATE eligibility certificate?

Ans: In such case, final year mark sheet (either 7 or 8 semester) must be uploaded as GATE eligibility document.

Ques: I am in final year of my qualifying degree program, which certificate do I need to upload as eligibility certificate?

Ans: Final year candidates need to get a Certificate from their HOD/Institute (in the format specified in Appendix A on the Information Brochure), must be uploaded.

Ques: I belong to OBC (non-creamy layer) category. Do I have to upload my category certificate, if yes, how?

Ans: No. Category certificates are meant only for Indian nationals who wish to avail a concession in GATE application fee. As per the criterion defined by GATE authority, only SC/ST/PwD candidates and all women candidates are eligible for application fee concession.

Ques: Is the downloaded mark sheet from internet acceptable as an eligibility certificate?

Ans: Yes, internet downloaded final year mark sheet of any one semester, which is digitally signed or duly signed with seal by the competent authority (Registrar, Controller of Examination etc.) only, is acceptable.

Ques: Is there a restriction on the number of attempts in GATE 2019?

Ans:No, there is no restriction on the number of attempts.

Ques: Is there any age limit criterion defined under GATE eligibility?

Ans: No, there is no such criterion defined on age limit.
