Make yourself familiar with GATE exam pattern

    • GATE is administered only once in a year.
    • It is an entrance exam for those who wish to gain admission to Master’s programs in premier engineering colleges in India. PSUs recruit through GATE.
    • The duration of the paper is 3 hours. 65 questions will be asked bearing a total of 100 marks.
    • MCQs and NAT questions are asked.
    • Familiarise yourself with all this information so that you can prepare accordingly.

    Check GATE 2021 Exam Pattern

Understand the syllabus and weightage of every topic

    • GATE applies to all engineering fields and a few other fields as well. You must know the subjects from your field that will be asked in the exam. If you miss out on any subject, you will end up losing valuable marks.
    • Make a note of the topics of every subject that will be asked from the exam. Ensure that you prepare well for each topic.
    • Analyze the weightage of every subject and topic. Research on previous years’ question papers well. This will give you an understanding of which areas will need more of your time.

    Check GATE 2021 Syllabus

    Choose appropriate resources and books

    • Study from one or two books for every subject. It is essential that your primary resources are books before you use other resources.
    • Look up the various offline and online resources available.
    • You can go through your undergraduate books to establish a good foundation before you proceed to more complex topics.

    Check GATE 2021 Important Books

    DOs of GATE preparation

    • It is essential that you focus on understanding concepts instead of memorizing them.
    • Practice question papers from previous years as often as you can.
    • Answer as many mock tests as you can.
    • Understand the nature of questions asked from each subject - whether they are theory-based or numerical-based. Then, study accordingly.
    • Attempt to find short methods to solve numerical questions.

    Plan your GATE preparation well

    • You must begin preparing for GATE as soon as possible. This will give you more time to practice.
    • Create an efficient study plan keeping in mind topic weightage and your lifestyle.
    • Allocate sufficient time for revision as well.
    • If you find yourself unable to study by yourself, you can get enrolled in preparatory courses - online or offline.
    • Set specific targets and dedicate your effort to achieve them. A good idea would be to establish daily, weekly, and monthly goals.

    Follow the study plan

    • Ensure that you steer clear from any distractions and work towards reaching your targets.
    • Begin with the basic for every topic and then, proceed to the more complex areas.
    • Cover every topic in the syllabus.
    • Make notes and revise them as often as possible.
    • Take subject-wise tests to evaluate your preparation.
    • Whenever a doubt arises, ensure that you get it clarified immediately.
    • Identify your strengths and weaknesses and work on them accordingly.
    • Do not move on to another topic while you are still stuck with the previous one. However, make sure to get it clarified soon.

    • It is only through revision that you will be able to retain all the information you have studied and practiced.
    • It is recommended that you dedicate a day or two in a week to revise what you have learned.
    • Plan your preparation in a way that the time taken for revision of any topic reduces gradually. If this does not happen, study that topic again.
    • Revision applies to numerical problems as well.

    Solve mock tests

    • Attempting mock tests will let you understand your performance level.
    • Your time management skills will also improve.
