GATE 2027 Preparation Tips

GATE 2027 Preparation Tips

GATE 2027 is scheduled for February 2027. With roughly 3.5 months from October 2026, a structured subject-wise plan is critical. Use the tips below to focus your remaining preparation time.

General Aptitude — Score Every Mark

  • Dedicate 30–45 minutes daily to GA. This is the highest-return section — 15 marks with no deep technical study required.
  • Solve all previous GATE GA sections from 2015 onwards, timed at 90 seconds per question.
  • Focus on Quantitative Aptitude (data interpretation, statistics) and Verbal Aptitude (reading comprehension) first.
  • Consistent daily GA practice for 4–5 weeks is enough to score 13–15 marks.

Computer Science (CS)

  • Start with Engineering Mathematics and Data Structures. These two sections carry 20–25 marks and directly underpin Algorithms, OS, and Databases.
  • Build OS and DBMS concepts from Galvin and Korth before attempting previous-year questions.
  • Never skip Computer Networks — TCP/IP, subnetting, and routing carry 7–9 marks in every GATE CS paper.
  • Theory of Computation yields high marks if studied systematically. Dedicate 3 weeks to automata, CFGs, and Turing machines.
  • Solve at least 5 complete previous-year GATE CS papers under timed conditions before the exam date.

Mechanical Engineering (ME) — Focus on Revised Syllabus

  • Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics carry approximately 30% of the ME paper. Start these in the first two months.
  • Add Control Systems and Additive Manufacturing to your study plan immediately — these are new GATE 2027 ME additions and will likely appear in the exam.
  • Strength of Materials and Theory of Machines carry 15–20 marks — focus on numerical solving speed.
  • Industrial Engineering topics (PERT/CPM, EOQ, LP) are predictable and high-scoring. Do not skip them.

Electronics and Communication (EC)

  • Begin with Electronic Devices and Analog Circuits — they carry 18–22% of the EC paper.
  • Master Signals and Systems before starting Communications — modulation analysis requires a strong transform foundation.
  • Practice Digital Circuits with a focus on sequential circuit design and state machines.
  • Electromagnetics is theory-heavy but consistent — cover Maxwell’s equations and transmission lines methodically.

Electrical Engineering (EE)

  • Build Electric Circuits and Signals and Systems first — they underpin Power Systems, Control Systems, and Electrical Machines.
  • Power Systems and Control Systems together carry 22–27 marks. Allocate at least 6 weeks to both.
  • The EE paper has a high proportion of NAT questions — practice numerical solving from previous papers every day.

Civil Engineering (CE)

  • Structural Engineering is the highest-weightage section. Allocate at least 2 months to Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, and RCC design.
  • Geotechnical Engineering carries 12–15 marks and has a consistent question pattern. Prioritise soil mechanics and bearing capacity.
  • For Environmental Engineering and Transportation, solving 5 years of previous papers is more efficient than extensive textbook study.

Final 4 Weeks — Mock Tests and Targeted Revision

  • Take 2 full mock tests per week and analyse every incorrect answer the same day.
  • Solve at least 3 previous-year GATE papers under timed, exam-like conditions.
  • Revise formula sheets and concept notes for every subject. Do not start new topics in the last 2 weeks.
  • Maintain a consistent daily schedule in the final 2 weeks — sleep, exercise, and routine significantly affect exam-day performance.

Ans. Standard books for GATE CS include CLRS for Algorithms, Galvin for Operating Systems, Korth for DBMS, Sipser for Theory of Computation, and Kurose and Ross for Computer Networks. For Engineering Mathematics, use B.S. Grewal. For General Aptitude, the MADE EASY Reasoning and Aptitude book covers all sub-areas effectively.

Ques. When is the GATE 2027 exam?

Ans. GATE 2027 will be held on February 6–7, February 13–14, and February 20–21, 2027, in multiple sessions. Your paper’s session will be confirmed on your admit card. Results are expected in March 2027. Check gate2027.iitm.ac.in for session-wise paper assignment once the schedule is published.

Ques. How should I cover the full GATE 2027 syllabus in 3–4 months?

Ans. Follow a phased approach. Months 1–2: complete Engineering Mathematics and GA, then cover the 3–4 highest-weightage core subjects. Month 3: finish remaining core subjects; ME students must cover Control Systems and Additive Manufacturing. Final 4 weeks: solve previous 5-year GATE papers under timed conditions, take 2 mock tests per week, and do formula-sheet revision only. Avoid starting new topics in the last 2 weeks before the exam.
