NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE TEST
Prakhar Singh, an engineering graduate of IIT Bombay secured All India Rank 1 in Civil Engineering stream of GATE 2019. He created high benchmarks by scoring 87.72 marks with GATE score 1000. Prakhar joined IES Master Classroom program in 2017 - 18 session which helped him throughout the course of preparation.
The concepts and short tricks taught in the institute helped him a lot while attempting the paper. His dedication and hard work is an example for every GATE aspirant. So, let’s have a look at his success journey and learn about his preparation strategy.
Prakhar completed his schooling from Champion School, Bhopal and then he completed B.Tech (Civil Engineering) from IIT Bombay. He was campus placed in Shapoorji Pallonji where he worked for 8 months. Then he left his job and joined IES Master for GATE preparation.
According to Prakhar, GATE paper has become very basic since 2016. If the candidate has a good command over the basics of each topic in GATE, he/she will score more in the exam.

As per Prakhar’s experience, while taking the GATE exam, the questions asked in the paper were the same as the previous years’ question papers. The only difference was the way in which the question was asked. Check GATE CE Syllabus
Time management plays an important role while attempting the paper. GATE aspirants have to solve 65 questions in 3 hrs which is not so as the questions are tricky and time taking. Prakhar followed a strategy to attempt those questions first in which he was sure about solving them. Time taking questions were left for the last which helped him in completing the exam 15 - 20 minutes prior to the exam.
Prakhar attempted online mock tests which were more difficult than the actual GATE exam. This helped him in pushing to score more in the exam. He says, ”The test series, which includes the single topic, mixed topics as well as full-length tests, helped me a lot in covering the entire GATE syllabus, and prepare myself in a better way”.
According to Prakhar, section one i.e., Engineering Aptitude and General Studies is not to be taken lightly as they are both important sections of the exam. For solving section two, keep a strong hold on short tricks and formula as this will help the candidates in answering correct questions in less time. Check GATE Exam Pattern
Prakhar suggested remembering code specifications as no direct questions are asked. Candidates planning to take GATE exam must look for the types of questions asked from this in the last 2-3 years and prepare for them thoroughly.
Prakhar used to pick 3-4 subjects a day and prepared his schedule of preparation. Prakhar says, “It is not feasible to cover many subjects in a day. So, prepare a time schedule and stick to it. If the schedule will not be followed, the backlog will keep on increasing.”
Preparing short notes are really helpful for last minute preparation. While preparing for the exam, candidates must prepare short notes for the section for which they find really useful and revise it on a daily basis. The strategy was followed by Prakhar and he saved a lot of time and energy while his last minute revision.
